JOHN BROWN Model 115 taillight repair
 

I have a taillight that one of the round lens holders, has undergone some surgery. It appears that the rounded rim(which holds the lens in place) has been bent up to a straight position. See photo. I'm searching for a method to "re-roll" the metal to a rounded position to match the other two lens holders.

I'd think that the best way to ensure a fit would be to install the snap ring, and hammer the rim down around the ring, maybe using punches if reaching the rim with the hammer is an issue.

I have used a hammer and a small piece of wood to gently tap the rim over the snap ring. The wood cushions the rim steel from getting marked up with unwanted hammer marks. Go slow and don't try to bend it over all at once. Go around the rim quite a few times. The snap ring should be free to be removed once bent over.

Many thanks to Will N and t42 for the replies! I believe that I can handle the project, except that I do not have a snap ring. Anyone know where I can find one? Any and all info will be appreciated!

I was looking at the wrong taillight. The Brown 115 appears to have the brass rim rolled over the lens without a ring. Later one used a retaining ring. My apologies.

t42, Checked out the rim and it is iron, as are the rims of the 2 other lenses. (clear and blue) The other 2 rims are rolled over the lens, without snap rings. The chimney top is marked Jno.W.Brown, model 115. Would you think that it is possible that Henry had them made some with iron rims, and some with brass rims?

As of now, my plan is to make a ring from #9 wire, clamp it in place, and then "roll" the rim back to it's original position. Then remove the wire ring, and glue the lens in place. The other 2 lenses appear to be held in as a "press fit", and show no evidence of adhesive. I may have to heat the rim to cherry red, and proceed in small increments, but I won't know until I try.

This project won't be on the "active" list until about May, after I return from sunny south Texas. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks for your input. Skolzie

According to McCalley's T bible, the 115 was a black and brass tail-light with brass trim. I still don't see any evidence of a snap ring, but pictures can be deceiving. I was hoping another member might have one and could share that info.

I have one that was reworked, that is bent up to replace the lens then bent back down and the result of bending the outer rim back down is not pretty. I have been looking for a replacement side piece that has not ben opened up.
