Period Correct Exhaust Build
 

Who does what?
I am building a late 1940's style 1932 Roadster...with a Flathead and dual 97's.

I need to design the exhaust.
I have Red's Headers to start. (not as period correct as making my own, I know)
I am interested in knowing what anyone may have done to create a Period Correct Exhaust from the Headers on back...
- All pipes slip fit?
- System held by hangers and not welded to frame
(Anyone sell vintage style hangers?)

All welds should be made with coat-hangers and a torch. ;)

There are probably dozens of "period correct" ways of doing it. All depends on which way you want it. Maybe something like this.

My dad was born in 1918 and this pic was taken before 1941. Had to be between 1938 and 40. Notice how the tail pipes were hung from the rear bumper on his 32 3 window. That is period correct.

And where you going to get duds like my dad was wearing. Notice the Road Rebel plate on the back. A Los Angelos club.

They use to put V8 tomato juice in a can that seemed to be just the right size and a heavier guage,this was pretty technical stuff . I think I used at least one of these to fix the damage done after installing the dash controlled exhaust cutout from JC Whitney that invariably would not completely shut and leaked.

Me and a couple of my buddys when we were 16 jopped a 32 5w and welded it all back together with coat hangers. My mother always wanted to know what happened to her coat hangers. Walt

Notice that they run beneath the axle . Makes for some clunks when crossing
RR tracks.

Who remembers the 'scavenger" pipes of the 60's?? Welded them to the 6 cyl chev mufflers (deuce coupe with an olds),flex pipe at the front off stock exh manifolds. duals, gave a "strange" sound.

My 33 had the remnants of pipes still in place. there was flexible pipe in there, the mufflers were mounted straight to the floor and the remaining tailpipe was mounted off the frame.

If that's period correct I'd rather do it a little more carefully and at least get some rubber in there.

When I did do mine I made it up from an exhaust meant for another car and I did gas weld it, so maybe it is still kinda old school.

Run a pair of torque tubes under the axle. Pennies in the crossovers, no mufflers.

Dont forget ripple pipes! Just heat and bend, the ripples actually look quite cool.

All water pipe with screw fittings. Very stout.

Use 1934 drive shafts....you will never get a better sound. That is what I have on my car.
