1940 standard grill

How can I tell if my grill is repop or original Ford? Think might be repop but want to make sure.

Re: 1940 standard grill

I am not 100% certain about a '40 Ford V8 (aka Standard) grille but I am certain the '40 DeLuxe grilles had a date on the very bottom. It is small, perhaps less than 1/8" tall but it's there.
I am only guessing here but Drake is very fond of putting his name all over everything he makes so I look for that on a repop.
Or, he's always saying how helpful his staff is, call them and ask...

Thanks grill I bought came in Drake boxes not sure if it is Drake or they put old grill on boxes when new one came in. Need to dig out and look so know what it is before selling it.

If it's a drake repop from the 80s, it's hard to tell. If I remember correctly, the only difference was the ejector pins form the mold and that was slight. The present ones are easy; they say Drake on them. I don't know when that started. Hre is a pic of an original

Re: 1940 standard grill

Original Grilles were of a Diecast material and probably had the Part Number cast into it on the backside. All the NOS Service Relacement grilles I have seen have had these numbers. Repros would not have these numbers.

Re: 1940 standard grill

Well looks like the grill is original or atleast the sides. There is Ford part number stamped on each side, one side is 01A-8207A1 LH*. Did not find anything on center sections though.

Stamped? Or cast upon?
Is that "LH" on there?

Re: 1940 standard grill

The LH is there and it is cast not stamped.

I have a couple of known NOS V8 grilles that have never been assembled that were purchased long before Bob Drake started having them cast. I will look at them and take some pictures in the next few days unless Kube does this first. It would surprise me if LH or RH was cast along with the part # but could be.

Deuce, Like you, I was very suspicious of the LH / RH. Why would Ford bother with such? The part number quickly identifies the part. Also, I have never witnessed any Ford OEM part marked RH /LF
It took me a bit to gather up my spare grilles. I have both a left & right NOS as well as three used rights and two used lefts. NONE have any RH nor LH.
I am confident that any grille with these markings is a reproduction.

Sorry to hijack but I am in need of a nice standard grille I assume the drake repops are pretty nice?

Re: 1940 standard grill

So would Drake have cast the Ford part number or did someone else reproduce these?

Might be one of Gene Scott's early creations. DD
