56' mercury choke...Another Question

On a original 56' mercury would they have had a electrical carburetor choke or mechanical choke.....If mechanical would it have had a mechanical choke cable.
Thank you in advance ...for any help....

No mechanical, no electrical. There was a heat tube from the exhaust manifold to the choke housing

In other words, the choke operates from heat on a bimetal spring.

I am not familiar with the carb's used on the 56 merc's, but if the choke is of the type with the round black cover that is adjustable by rotating it left or right and retained with three screws, if you are not concerned about originality and you are 12 volt, you can convert it to an electric choke with a little work. I am sure others on here can elaborate more for your specific application. just a thought. I was going to do this to my 51 merc.,but I never changed from the six volt system.----Jim

Going electric is easy just make sure your donor part makes the chock turn the right way. I have used some from 70s fords that worked great.

56 Merc had a hot air choke from a tube in cross over in intake manifold. Tube would burn out some times and fill choke with carbon from exhaust. Bill
