Battery Fit the Holder ?

Group,

I need to replace my 6 V Model A battery. Before I replace it, I need to know what the correct size is. My present Battery has about 1/2 inch of clearance between the outside of the battery and the battery holder. While I can "kind of" use the battery hold-down to secure the battery, it seems like the battery should be slightly bigger and "fill" the space in the holder so that the clamp can hold the battery better.

Comments ? Should the battery just squeeze into the base holder ?

Group 1 was the original size.

Re: Battery Fit the Holder ?

if it is a little loose with the required group 1 battery, put a little block of wood on the side to solve the slop.....

I've been buying the group 2 batteries from Batteries Plus. They are just a hair bigger than the group one,and the hold down from Brattons fits them exactly.I thought that group 2 batteries were a thing of the past, but I spotted them in the store and have been buying them ever since. They are a nice snug fit in the battery box too. They slide into the holder like they were made for it.I was glad to find them,I never cared for the fit of the group one in the A.

That's good news Keith.

A while back someone asked for a product to make during his retirement years. How about a plastic cover to fit down the sides of a ground one battery that gives the battery the look and fit of an original battery. :)

If you look up Batteries Plus, and look at their website,it doesn't show the group 2 battery.I found it while I was in the store picking up a battery for a Honda Dream. It may be updated by now,but a couple of years ago it just wasn't listed online. The store manager told me that battery was a big seller to the old car people.

Re: Battery Fit the Holder ?

I like Tom's idea if the group 1 is a bit smaller using a cover giving the original look. Today many batteries have a cover which helps insulate the battery a bit.

Re: Battery Fit the Holder ?

Ask for a Group 1 battery for 6 volts.

9 1/8 lenght, 7 1/8 width, 9 3/8 height

NAPA - BAT 7244
Exide - 7200
Tractor supply - Com 1 HP (part number 0470506) I think.
Autozone - 1-6 volt

Re: Battery Fit the Holder ?

You can buy them at the Batteries Plus chain store. We all got used to using the group one, because that was all we could find.I just happened to spot them in the store, just the right fit.A little more lead in them. They are NOT a golf cart battery as some have tried to tell me.

Group,

Learned some tings today :

1. Group 2 would be a better fit for some battery holders

2. The Height dimension includes the battery posts

3. A piece of rope around the battery helps to guide it down into the battery holder through the driver floor.

Let me talk to my mechanic...wait, that's me !

Have to laugh as the beauty of the Model A is that I can do most of the work myself.

The Batteries Plus web site suggest a group 19L battery for A's:

http://www.batteriesplus.com/product...el-A/1930.aspx

I've never heard of that size...

Re: Battery Fit the Holder ?

I wish the parts houses would sell a batter holder and hold-down that are a bit smaller than stock, to properly old a group 1 battery, and bolt up to the original holes in the frame.

Does anyone know of a 12v battery that will fit in the support bracket and fill the Brattons battery holddown frame? Bill G

I can measure my battery -- it's a Sears Die Hard. What are the dimensions of the Brattons frame?
