Any hams out there?

Looking for hams (amateur radio operators) who are also interested in Model A Fords.

Due to my advanced age (63) I have abandoned a lifelong motorcycle interest (addiction) in favor of the more-reasonable Model A commitment.

COMBINING INTERESTS --

In my motorcycle days I rode around the USA with a 2-meter ham rig making contacts far and wide.

In the same spirit I intend to mount some kind of ham rig in my newly-acquired 1930 Tudor.

I would be interested in hearing form any other Model A hams.

Thanks,

AE4XH

Yup, been doing the "A" thing since high school.
I haven't abandoned the scooter thing yet..I never did ride on the street
but sure give the woods a beating..In my younger days I even did the flat track thing...
I have a 6 meter rig in my 30 2 door..
I get on 160 CW late at night sometimes also.
Yea, at the advanced age of 63 I guess you have one foot in the grave. (Yer jist a kid)
I'm still working and actively racing vintage circle track.
By the way, I'm 79.

Between ham radio adn Model As I keep pretty busy, always something to do on both. Spent Saturday at an air/car show and Sunday working on my vertical. One of these days I am going to have to get to the "honey-do's" around the house. Pat KG6JSL

I always wanted to be a ham since I was a morse interceptor in 1962-1965 in the Old Army Security Agency.

Now if I can only figure out how to install a Collins R390A in the model A...LOL

Dennis,

A "Boatanchor" would be the correct radio for the Model A.

N8HGN here. COngrats on new "A"!! It seems to me that the true definition of "multi-tasking would be running 80M CW from a straight key on a knee-board while driving a Model "A"

VK6FM here,

Active occassionaly, recently drove across Australia towing my Roadster on a trailer to attend the National Meeting. About 5,500 miles total. Active when mobile (in the modern) on 20 and 40 using Tarheel whip and 80m wire when at camp at night. 2m handheld in the Model A. Had a great time and the contacts made the drive so much more enjoyable. Got me interested in radio again.

Enjoy both the Model A and radio guys!

I'm not a ham, but my dad was (W8KOO). He and I went to several National Meets in either a '30 Standard Roadster or a '29 Open Cab Pickup. He installed his 2-meter rig in the Model A's and I remember his really enjoying talking to other hams and mentioning what his mode of transportation was. He powered the radio externally with a 12 volt lawn mower batterry and mounted the antenna off the rear bumper mount or off of the pickup bed. Your post brought back many good memories. I miss him. :)

While I thnk of it, our ham club, Sonoma County Radio Amateurs, got a Special Event license (K6J) to work the Pacific Coast Air Museum annual air/car show on August 21-22, in Santa Rosa, CA. Should be some cars from the Sonoma As as well. We will be working SSB on 14m, no freq assigned. Look for us and lets talk A's as well as the show. Will have QSL cards. Pat KG6JSL

I know a guy that had an Icom 765 mounted on the handle bars of a Goldwing and a screwdriver antenna mounted on a small motorcycle trailer..He had a home made paddle on the right grip and worked 40 CW while traveling all over the country...I worked him several times..He was amazing. He could go 35 wpm while going 70 mph down the freeway.

Re: Any hams out there?

I have been an Amateur Radio operator (ham) since I was 14 years old. I have now been licensed for 46 years (you do the math!). I've never tried operating from my Model A because I fear the ignition noise would be fierce.

I am 95% a CW operator somewhat active on 40, 30, 20 and 15 meters. I only have a Windom antenna up in the trees near my condo now. At one time I had BIG antennas and BIG power to them. I've kinda gone full circle now using 100 watts to the wire antenna just like when I started as a teenager.
