The original fans are kind of dangerous. I bought a new radiator from Brass Works and it was expensive. The original fan broke about three days after I installed the new radiator.
The new radiator now has a big gash. The radiator does not leak but it is not very pretty. The old fans have had a lot flexing over the years and they tend to crack and break. I would buy new just for safety.

I think a lot of people try to rotate the engine with fan blade instead of using the crank. This is another way they get bent and causes them to break.

I am sure there are other people that know people that know somebody that balances fans.

A lawnmower shop can do it. I purchased a lawnmower blade balancer cheap somewhere but can't remember the source.

:oI was putting a new alternater on our 28, and was checking the blade, found two cracks next to the hub, one on each side. These old blades are hollow at the hub. We replaced it with a new aluminum blade. :)I'm going to frame the old blade as a reminder and for show and tell.

Buy an aluminum one from one of the vendors. When you consider the cost of radiators or/and removing hood dents, $50 bucks is good insurance.

the late 31 split fan are better in 32 ford made a one piece very rare to find aluminum is just fine

This is for points vehicle!! Just need some one to balance and paint etc for points. I've been using them for many years with no problem if they are done correct and check them frquently. The aluminum can fail too! as well as the four blades.

First make sure the blades run in the same plane, and the leading edge of one blade is parallel to the other blade's leading edge. If these are good I'd bet you'll find the balance is very close to perfect. Hopefully the blades aren't bent from using them to turn the engine. Even the last 3 aluminum fans I checked were so well balanced that I wouldn't touch them.

the blade looks to be in perfect shape no nicks or bends on either blade and as gary said this is a point truck

Run a 2 blade repro. Mount the OEM fan when you get to the show...I've witnessed more than one seemingly NOS fan fail (always quite violently). This catastrophe willproduce at least one of the following conditions: holed or destroyed hood and/or radiator and/or hoses and/or water pump and/or generator and/or fan belt...you get the idea?!?!? Worse yet, you or a spectator could be injured or KILLED by shrapnel.

How would you balance the fan for points? How would one add weight to the light side of remove weight from the heavy side and keep it looking good enough for points? I thought the points cars only had the original fans on the engines for the manditory tour and static judging. How far out of balance does a fan have to be to cause damage for that short time the engine is running?

if its an original and not balanced already, there is a problem, like internal rust, hidden welds, filler. I'd look for a better original if I had to have one for fine point.

I can check the balance, but as mentioned it would be hard to add weight or subtract weight on an original, and as Pat mentioned if it's out of balnce enough to need correcting, then you likely need to find a better fan.

How much out is it?? How often/far is this "point" truck going to be run??
