overflowing trans pt 2 My trans is still spitting out ALL the trans fluid. I was using 90 w now I'm trying 140 but it looks as if it is coming out top vent, is this even possible? ALL the fluid comes out but by looking at it it appears to be coming out top vent, anyone ever heard this? Its on my 41 sideshift but that side stays completely dry, its only on pass side.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Sounds like your rear may be higher than your trans and you rear end lube is moving forward through the torque tube - check the oil level in your rear.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Is there supposed to be some kind of vent in the rearend.I believe you can remove the top bolt that holds the sides together ,drill it thru and fabricate a piece of tubing turned up to get rid of pressure.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 What was the verdict on the baffle setup . I have nothing this new so I can't look at one . If the vent is in front this is a high fling area from the main drive teeth . Did a baffle get left out ? Just fishing but a vent in a high fling area needs baffles & if the baffle thing is missing or not functioning this could indeed empty your tranny . . Odd problem . A pic or 2 of this vent setup would really help .

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 On the baffle I'm not sure yet. I thought that was the piece over the vent like a hood but I guess I'm going to have to remove it to find out, so out comes the floor again. And it is directly over the main gear at the front ,that does seem a bad place for it.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Some of the 40-48 type side loader 3 speeds had the small top mounted vent and some did not. If the vent is there, the case not only had a hole in the top for the vent, but there would be an internal "baffle" which was part of the gear box casting itself. It was basically a flange of sorts that blocked the oil from spitting directly at the vent hole. If I remember correctly, the baffle had a kind of 90 degree shape to it. If that is not there, I'd guess someone might have simply drilled a hole for a vent in a case that never had one originally.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Mac is correct, of course. The internal baffle is cast into the case and has a 90 degree or "L" shape beneath the vent.
The vent also has a pop-up cap ... which could be missing ... or in other situations be clogged, stuck, or crudded over making it useless. |
Re: overflowing trans pt 2 If some had it and some did not,is there a reason not to plug it or would that do harm?
|
Re: overflowing trans pt 2 At the risk of incurring the wrath of the vent gods I would simply plug it . Trannys don't have blowby and with the rear cork-felt-o-ring they are certainly not air tight anyway . The question remains though - Why did this start happening ?

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 That's what I want to know, although when I bought the car it was very low but being that the whole transmission was wet I thought it was the sideshift seals or cover gasket so I replaced them(they were bad) but now that area is completely dry its only pass side. It might have been doing this for years before I got it.

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Hmmm...the vent with cast passage going down is associated with early side shifters, 1940. I wonder two things...was it changed to the common type because it dumped oil flung by gears overboard...and could this '41 have the early setup? I know I have an early one somewhere and I can spot the difference, but right now I don't remember any detail. I believe it has a cast-in passage visible from bellhousing area...

Re: overflowing trans pt 2 Maybe I can take some pics tomorrow at the shop....stay tuned
