Noise from Torque tube
 

34 Sedan, has a rattle from the torque tube on the over run, ie, when decelerating. The noise disappears under acceleration.
Any ideas on what it could be?
The noise is definitely from the torque tube.

If it has always done this ,might be ring and pinion out of specs. Could also be lack of lubrication in universal joint.

Or possibly front drive shaft bearing.

Sounds like the universal joint to me. Sometimes the pins at the rear coupling or driveshaft to pinion gear will come loose and and hit on the inside of torque tube but this would probably make noise accelerating and decelerating.

Check the rubber ball on the wish bone . Easy fix if loose or worn !!

Put the rear axle up on jack stands, start the engine, put it in gear and let up on the clutch so the back wheels are spinning in air. Then get under there and listen for where the noise is coming from. Our hearing is very directional and you can tell whether it's coming from the front, the back, or the middle of the tube. To get an even better listen get a long screw driver, press the handle against your ear and touch the other end to the torque tube in various places to "hear inside" what's going on. I did all of that to diagnose a problem with mine.

If you can't hear the noise because there is no load on the drive train, have someone sit in the driver's seat and apply the brakes slowly while reving the engine slowly to maintain the drive train speed while putting the load of the rear brakes on it.

Put a tube of low melt point grease in the "U" joint. Low melt point is the cheapest grease on the shelf. G.M.

i just had the same problem with my 34 sedan a ticking rattling noise , i thought it was the brake rods rattling , after putting car on hoist and running thru the gears the noise is in the torque tube , i then removed diff and torque tube to find out that the rear drive shaft lock pin had came out 1/2 way and was hitting the side of the torque tube , now to fix the whole diff with new bearings whilst its out

Max, I too had a similar situation when I first got my 46 coupe. It turned out to be a couple of loose bolts that hold the casing around the universal joint. After snugging them down (and 2 busted knuckles) :eek: the rattle was resolved. I still periodically check to be sure nothing has loosened. Hope you are able to resolve. Steve

Sounds like your outer pinion nut is rattling around in there :confused:
