6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Does anyone know if the radiator core on a six cylinder `51 F1 pickup has the same dimensions as that of a flathead V-8? The tank measures about 2 3/4 inches across but the core is recessed under the tank like it could be smaller than that of a V-8.

Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Pretty sure same size only,, hose outlets are different

Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Are you really sure you want to make that swap? Granted you are swapping a flat 6 for a flat 8, but sixes can be built "cool". Finned heads, multi carb intakes and split exhaust come to mind. Mine is not a flat head but I would not change it for any thing. I just ran it from FL to NH. In a word "sweet".

Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Looks like you are having a fun trip. Down to Florida partway on the autotrain now the ferry. Keep in touch for Chuck's New England tour.

I never liked the Ford flathead six. We called them a hot water six. Don't have any idea how that originated. My neighbor friend had one in a `41 business coupe when I was growing up. We both grew to hate that engine. You absolutely could not back up a small grade. It would just jump up and down. Of course we blamed the engine. My V-8 is ready and I am ready! I think... Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Well, If both you and the V8 are ready then go for it! Run what you are happy with and don't look back. I never figured I would like this six as much as I do. I just runs so good and it proved itself on a long run.

Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Nothing sounds better than a V8 with duals. There's just something special about them. Henry hated sixes which was good enough for me. I have 2 V8s and I hated sixes from childhood all my long life until I bought one. It is in a 49 F-1. It runs great, the blocks don't crack, they don't overheat or vapor lock and it always starts. It just doesn't sound as good. 6 is OK!

Where can I get the multi carb intake for a "G" model six cylinder? I am ready for a rebuild and want some performance in my SIX :D |
Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Motor mounts are different Drilling out the rivits is the hardest part. V8s sound awesome but i have had some 6s that are powerful and got a cool burble sound, what ever makes you happy as the sayin goes...

Re: 6 Cylinder/V-8 Swap In `51 F1 Finding a H core to rebuild is another option...
I have one in the shop now and the full rebuild kit was $1200. For performance start with raising the compression. You can go oldschool and braze a couple of mounting flanges to the original intake to get a dual. |
