flathead question
 

when I bought my 36 coupe (project) the motor was out of the car. It is not the org engine. He told me it was a smooth running engine. would like to fire this thing up before putting it in the car. I ran the numbers off the head and It shows up as being a 1945 or 1946. motor turns freely by hand, plugs looked good, no oil deposits,and motor oil looks ok.Whats the set up should I use to bring it back to life. Were these positve or negative ground. Any help would be great, thanks.

To bench run, starter works the correct direction either ground... I put blocks under the water pumps, an old radiator and hoses so I could run it for more than a minute... A mechanical oil pressure gauge... NO exhaust at all past the cast iron manifolds... A gas can to the fuel pump... Hot to the coil... Jumper cables to the starter, yes it was loud...

if you're running full voltage to the coil, can you burn up the coil running it too long??..run negative from battery to coil....and don't forget to take that wire off coil when thru running.....good luck.....Mike

If running a standard 6 volt coil it should be fine running straight off the battery all day long. I just fired up a 32 v8 for its first run in about 30 years. Before you fire it up turn it over with the plugs out and your thumb over each plug hole to check for compression, if she's been sitting for a long time be ready for stuck valves.
