Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV The owner of an old gas station in Huntington, WV took the station building back over after about 15 years of neglect, removed old cars and trash. Started with a little paint and lighting. I called him and asked if I could come over and look around today, IT WAS HIGH 60's TO ALL MOST 70 DEGREES TODAY!!!!!!!! Shadetree and I have talked about the old station for years, now it is starting to look GREAT.

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Thanks for the memories. The station my dad run in Kansas is still there but the roof has fallen in and the walls are starting to fall. I do think it is past any help, glad this one has been saved. ~~Walts37~~

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV That's very cool. I like the Lady Liberty. Kind a makes you want to pull in for a cold Dr. Pepper and maybe clean the bugs off the windshield...

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV This is great news! Every time that I'm in Huntington and getting ready to pass that station, I always expect to find a vacant lot. I've watched it since my college days in the early 70's and it has slowly deteriorated over the years. Great to see it is finally being preserved.
FWIW, around 1971-2 there was a 30-31 Coupe body sitting in an alley a few blocks west of that old station (closer to 3rd Avenue and probably 28th Street). It had been a dirt track stocker and was painted pink. It was pretty "used-up" and I often wondered what happened to it. Anyone else remember the car? Jim |
Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Thanks for sharing the photos, enjoyed them .

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Bruce In Southern Ohio ..................
Makes me think of "Moon Pies and RC Cola". Also putting peanuts into my $ .05 Coca Cola glass bottle. Did you guys do that, when you were a kid, hanging around your favorite service station ? Thanks for posting this. I loved it ! MIKE :) |
Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Mike, my Grandfather (on my mom's side) had a Sinclair “Fillin' Station/General Store”:) in Cleveland, Georgia from the early '40's through the mid '60's. I spent many hours playing around in the garage:cool:. My preferred snack was a Dr. Pepper with a Moon Pie. I also put peanuts in Coca-Cola, thought that was the way you were suppose to drink it:eek:. The building was demolished about thirty years ago...:( Vic

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Bruce,
Thanks for the great pictures of one of my favorite old service stations. I have seen this many times. The last time I saw it there were several dead Volkswagen Beetles around it. Looks like someone is going to re-model and do something with it. I sure hope it is old car related. The gorgeous pickup sure adds a touch of nostalgia to the old station. This would be a nice gathering point for some our old cars to get pictures. Shadetree |

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV I remember driving by that station while I was working in Huntington ten years ago. It's great that it has been saved.
About the same time, I negotiated a deal to purchase the old Bellbuckle garage in Bellbuckle, TN. Bellbuckle is a tourist town with lots of old stores, lots of weekend craft fairs, Moon Pie festivals, etc. I planned to restore it, install a couple of glass globe pumps, install above ground tanks and sit around in my overalls, with my Bassett Hounds, the 40 pickup parked there-----and sell gas on the weekends---for a slight premium---and let the folks take pictures of me too! The EPA nixed the whole deal!!!!! The original tanks are still in the ground and before the property can be sold, the tanks must be removed!!!!! The cost of removal made the cost impossible to absorb! Soooooo, the building is still sitting there, with new siding----and will continue to sit there until someone comes up with the $80+K or the EPA relaxes their rulings. Now, I have gotten almost too old! |
Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV What a most righteous service station! It's absolutely perfect in every way and I'm really glad it's being repurposed.
I would love to buy a little station like that to set up a small business in there all while keeping the history alive. |
Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV That Sinclair Station looks good  and your Ford makes it look great! :D

Re: Old Gas Station In Huntington, WV Talked to the owner, he is going to try to change oil and do detailing, trying to find out when it was built and what brand name was on station, told in the 50's or 60's they sold Cushman Scooters at this location, will try and find out more, Bruce

Don't wait until the EPA relaxes their standards. Even the dirt, around the tanks, has to disposed of, as hazardous material. MIKE :) |

Here is a restored Standard Oil Station in Bowling Green KY. This one also narrowly escaped destruction, and now serves as an unfilling station for an adjacent downtown park. My 1923 Model T is in the drive.
