1936 Ford with 59ab motor

Hi have a 1936 Ford PU with a 59AB motor and want to put on dwells but been having problems finding out if Fenton headers will work. Main question is steering box might be in the way and cause problems. Have notice someone in 2010 had a similar question but no replies.

I assume you mean to say "duals" as in dual exhaust?

I have a 36 pickup but unfortunately I do not have the answer to your question. Just wanted to let you know that your question IS being read.

Sorry I cannot answer your question for sure,I think running the fentons may be a problem with the steering.I just recieved a set of headers from Red's headers for my 1950 f1 with a 8BA.I read somewhere that the fentons would hit in my truck,so I went this route.I'm not saying yours is the same.Maybe a phone call to Reds or someone else that sells them will clear it up for you.

Re: 1936 Ford with 59ab motor

I don't know about Fentons with a stock steering box. I have them on a '36 (not pickup) that has a '39 box. Took just a bit of grinder massage and that seems fairly common with those. Do you still have the battery in the frame? That would be the other problem getting the extensions past there.

There are cast iron Fentons that will work with the existing steering. Contact Red's Headers and he can tell you which ones work.

Not certain about the Fenton headers. However, I know for a fact the metal (tube) headers fit a 59AB in a 36 Ford.

Re: 1936 Ford with 59ab motor

Reds Headres; Is a better choise, they are made to clear the sterring box. also are smooooooth tube inside, makes for a good sound, engine running cooler, less back pressure, plus plus, I hope you will run ( put) a good stright through muffler, as in Brockman mellon tone, made in amercia, as are Reds header..... and for the sake of piece and quicket and the hood.... Re: 1936 Ford with 59ab motor

I used Red's complete kit with headers and the extension pipe to clear the battery in stock location on my 36 pickup. No problem with the steering box or battery location, I had to adjust the pipe in the clutch pedal area to keep the pedal from hitting it when depressed. I've never seen a kit that fit perfect but I was well satisfied with Red's kit, Good quality materials.

Back in 58 ,I had a 35 3W coupe with cast iron Fentons & they cleared the steering box OK.

I wonder, just what is your reasoning for wanting headers? If you are building a race car, with a full race engine, headers can be beneficial.. For general street use, dual exhaust with stock cast iron manifolds will give you all the performance that your engine can put out..
It is advisable to use at least 2" pipes all the through the system, including the tail pipes..
Of course stock cast iron manifolds will not give you the bragging rights that headers will, they will save you a lot of money and grief...
The engine in my '36 is a well built 59AB.. I have the stock '33-36 log type manifolds, which are the manifolds that came on the car... The car has always ran very well...
I tend to be very old school, I mean the real old school, not the perception that most people have now of how it was done in the good ole days when we built very fast cars from parts we scrounged from a wrecking yard.
From the attached pix you can see that there is no "billet" to blind a person, just parts that have been functioning very well for almost 60 years..

I have rads headers on a 59 ab in a 36 5w .had to send them back because they hit steering,.they supposely redid them, but still hit,had to raise front of engine a small amount to clear and ground a csoch off the gear,,put Brockman mufflers @ 2 inch pipe. All the way back,1/34 would have given more clearence thru frame.something to think about, had to make special brackets to center pipe thru the frame Don P

Don, did you have the U shape spacers on your front engine mounts and still had to raise the front some more?

Re: 1936 Ford with 59ab motor

I'm sort of with blucar on this one. I purchased headers during the early stages of building my coupe (at a time when I could afford them). When the time finally came, the right side didn't even come close to fitting so I ended up using a pair of stock cast-iron truck manifolds with straight through mufflers & a pipe out each side. My very expensive headers now make a lovely wall-hanging in the garage........

Re: 1936 Ford with 59ab motor

On my '40 I put a 3/16" flat washer between the motor mount rubber pad and the water pump...this gave me plenty of clearance for the Fenton header at the steering box...don't know for sure if it is the same for '36 but I think it is...

I purchased a very expensive, (I was making $1.75 per hour at the time) set of Belond headers for my '36 Ford in 1954 when I put the 59AB in my car..
We could not get the left header to clear the steering gears. Out of desperation I took a hammer to the middle pipe.. The right pipe would not clear the right side splash pan so we removed the splash pan..
Looking at the bent up left header and the big gaping hole the missing splash pan created on the right side... I removed the headers, installed the stock '36 Ford cast iron manifolds, reinstalled the splash pan and never looked back.
The Belond headers have been hanging on the wall of my garage since 1960, "Wall Art" of a poorly planned concept...

I've got Reds Headers with Brockman steel packs, on my 36 pickup ,couldn't be happier + the headers fit like glove .

59 series engine was introduced in 1946 models. Ford and Mercury were the same.
