I need help with 47' ford brakes
 

I am posting this for someone else...until he gets registered ...lol

Upon taking apart the brakes on a 1947 Ford, I found wavey spring washers on 3 of the brakes behind the flat plate that holds the brake shoe onto the backing plate.
I have found no vendor handling these washers and they are not shown in any catalogs. Are these a Ford part ? or are they not necessary ? and for what purpose do they serve?
These washers measure about ID .532 by OD .824 by .008 thick

If it is original '47 Ford Brakes, it sounds like this may be something that is not original but added by someone. I can not see what would hold them in place. Could you post a picture?

I've never seen them on any late 40's brakes I've removed.

I've seen and used them on post-war brakes to tighten up the shoes from lateral movements. Pretty thin and don't seem to be in the green bible or any illustration. Guys that do a lot of old Ford Brake jobs save them for their own stuff that may need snugging up. Probably not an essential piece. New shoes are still available and should not need them. Old shoes, relined a bunch of times may need them. Good Luck: Fred A

Spring Washers, '47 Brakes
 

Within the last month, swapped out the front brakes on my '47 for Lincolns.On the Ford brakes I found the spring washers as described and took one with me to Richard at Early V8 Garage. Richard showed me his modest stock of those washers but I inferred that they were of his hold out stash for special use and not for usual sale. Not a problem for me since I was going with the Bendix brakes, and did. As for the drawing on Mac's site, I checked that one also and see that the spring washers are not shown. The scale and resolution is not clear, but they are not there if you know what to look for. As for their future use: You might find that they are not needed if the correct size cotter pin is used on assembly and there is no excess play. Don't get it too tight because the centering of the shoe depends on being able to move. At those pressures though, that would have to be really tight. Good Luck: Fred A

Yes, commonly used but not standard. Find a Bendix brake parts dealer and root through the catalog...they have these and some of the clips needed for elderly Ford-Locheed type, presumably made for some other application. I used to get them from a display rack everyone seemed to have, but drum brake stuff has been non-mainstream for a long time now.
