I have a floor shift 3sp trans case I cannot read the case stamping on bottom rear. Serial number(stamped on top above inspection plate) is 99C-632,350. Is this a pickup? 1939? Thank You for any input.

Check with Mac Van Pelt of Van Pelt Sales. He's the expert in transmissions. However, his chart indicates a 99A 001 to 101,--- is a 1939 Mercury. But, he will probably give you more definite into.

99C would be commercial but the number predates the 46 model year. It may be late 42 or late 45 though. Commercial models were produced a little longer after passenger car production halted for the war effort and after VE day Ford started producing commercial models first in mid 1945. Passenger cars took a while to get tooled back up.

Don: 99C refers to 1939 commercial 112" WB 85HP chassis. or pick-up.

All cars and pickups manufactured with a 239 95 HP engine had the "99" in the VIN serial number from 39 till after the war when they added a year designator for 1947. It designates any vehicle with a 239 CID engine beginning in 1939. It can be a Mercury or a pickup but the Ford passenger cars only had 221s till after the war and kept the "18" designator prefix till then. You have to go by the linear number to identify the year of production and even that is not set in stone.

Mac VanPelt's web site serial number list only covers passenger cars as a general rule. Commercials and trucks are a whole different ball game. You have to do some searching to find that information.

If the transmission has the short output set up on the back that used the slip joint drive shaft yoke then it's a pickup for sure.
