Reason for a noisy lifter On another motor he had one adjustable lifter that kept loosening off. When we pulled it, this is what was found.

Re: Reason for a noisy lifter anyone who uses adjustable lifters deserves all the problems that go with their use, adjustables are just a crutch that people use because they think they are cool and easy to use because they think they cant get them set the ford way

Re: Reason for a noisy lifter I've taken apart Flatheads with burned valves and found original non-adjustable lifters. It's all a crap shoot.

Re: Reason for a noisy lifter If you need a single I may have one. But it's probably better to buy a whole set and change them all. Don't forget to buy cam break in lube and do it right.
Now for an opinion on this. Please take it as such. Quote:
I am not arguing your opinion and experience so please don't get irritated. But it depends on alot of things. IF you set them right and they are treated as they should there will be normal wear and tear. Adjustables work beautifully for me and most of the guys I have goofed around with. Flatheads in general take their own special brand of care. Like everything else too many RPM's, lack of oil change or low oil pressure, and abuse over time lead to failure everytime. If you have a 50 year old abused part it has no choice but to fail. Adjustables are the main reason the average guy can install a camshaft in an F-head. Grinding the valves to proper clearance today and 50 years ago was a chore. I have a valve grinder at the house and can do this, I collect old equipment though. Just imagine if no adjustables. All but the most hard headed or die hard person would be driving an overhead and the Flathead would have seen a much more limited comeback. Just my observation and opinion from enjoying the ability to get greasy on this old stuff. Happy Holidays, Tim |
Re: Reason for a noisy lifter Ford used adjustables on re-manufactured engines. I have run into quite a few in cores that I've bought over the years.
If they were good enough for Ford I guess their good enough...... I use them with a regrind camshaft with a smaller base circle to get the clearance. But I've done quite a few engines with the originals. just takes some time and patience. |

Re: Reason for a noisy lifter You know what, I do not think there is any future for adjustable valves in engines, they will never catch on!!!;)
