vibration---GONE ???? Can't find my old thread on this. Here's what happened: I installed a rebuilt engine :) back in June 2011 and the car still had the same vibration :( as with the old engine. I drove 75 miles this summer  with the new engine and could'nt go faster then 40 MPH  because of the vibration. I did'nt use the car from about  the 10th of October until last Saturday and the vibration was worse then before. Today I took her out for the last drive of this year and the vibration was gone.:D I got it up to 55 MPH with no problem,a little vibration when letting off the gas with it still in gear but not much. The only thing I can think of is the rear end oil was thick because of the cold weather the last couple of weeks, about 30 at night but, I drove her for an hour, the oil should of thinned out, right ? Any thoughts on this one ? Thanks to all, Dennis/CT;)

Re: vibration---GONE ???? Boy, this one sounds like a real puzzle. I'll be interested to see how it sorts out.
I really doubt if it's oil viscosity effect. The only thing it reminds me of is unbalanced tires sort of getting in and out phase causing a vibration to come and go. I'm surprised it used to happen below 40 mph, but maybe if there are supplimentary front end issues it might be possible. Steve |
Re: vibration---GONE ???? When does the vibration start? Is first gear ok, or vibration ? . second gear ok ,or vibration? If you don't have vibration in first gear then its ok same as second but if you have vibration in second then i would say its the second gear. You get the idea. The vibration sounds like the transmission or engine mounts. When installing the engine you did change the rubber?

Re: vibration---GONE ???? I'm thinking something like a U-joint.Maybe a broken cap, letting the spider run around off center. Then somewhere along the line it popped back where it belonged, and is running there right now.Where those joints are enclosed and wrapped in grease, they can be pretty bad before you hear anything. If one of the needle bearings in the transmission or driveshaft went bad,I could see it hanging up for a while until the pieces broke up enough to let thing run free.I think you can expect it to come back.Loose metal parts don't repair themselves.A hanging rear brake could do something like that, but you would have seen smoke in a few hundred feet.

Re: vibration---GONE ???? colder weather=lower air pressure in tires.

Re: vibration---GONE ???? Wheel balance issue?

Re: vibration---GONE ???? I suspect U-Joint too

Re: vibration---GONE ???? Interesting, so that last cylinder finally got the rings seated? A major part of the engines performance is uniformity between the cylinders. With a fresh engine the uniformity is missing, and could lead to vibrations, until the engine has gone through a break-in period. Not saying that this is what you are experiencing but, can't say that it isn't.

Re: vibration---GONE ???? I say a frozen u-joint.

Re: vibration---GONE ???? I had a number of vibrations in my rebuilt engine. No specific one but now that it has over 1000 miles on it, it runs a lot smother. Don't know if this is the way they work but mine seemed to be better after a few miles.

Re: vibration---GONE ???? front end is all new, it's not a tire balance issue.Vibration was felt trough out the entire car, floor, seat etc.Vibration is in any gear at a high RPM. Thanks
