removing studs in early ford drums
 

What is the correct way to remove wheel studs in early ford drums with internal hub? I have been told these where swedged in and simply cannot just be knocked out without possible damage to hub. So whats the correct way??? Thanks

This is for drums that are OUTSIDE the hub. When they were assembled, studs were pressed into the hubs. Then, the drum was dropped over the studs. The holes in the drum were countersunk and there was a shoulder on the studs sticking up above the face of the drum. Then, they pressed the shoulder down into the countersink, firmly "riveting" the drum to the hub. To get drums off, a 5/8" diameter hole saw will fit down over the stud and cut out the swaged portion of the stud. It will cut a square groove in the face of the drum where the countersink was and it will ruin the stud, but the stud will come out without ruining the hub. Others might recommend grinding the head of the stud off inside the drum. Either way should work.

I don't know if their the same as Model A rear drums but on those I have cut the studs off flush with a hacksaw then drilled a 3/8" hole in the center about 3/8" deep and popped them out with a punch. The replacements need to be swaged in using a 20+ ton press being backed up properly.
