Radiator Recorring

I would like to have my radiator recorred verus buying a new one. Is it in fact better to have the two tanks removed and replaced with a new core in the middle? Who has a good core for sale that will fit exactly without problems? This is what I'm looking for NO PROBLEMS!!! Lastly is the aggravation worth it and is there any cost saving at all?

Thanks for your time
Cape Codder

Has anyone done this for themselves verus taking it to a dealer? Pros & CONs please!

Re: Radiator Recorring

I will need others to help me remember the name and exact information, but there is a guy in central Illinois who makes excellent radiator cores or will recore yours for you.

I have just moved so most of my papers, info, etc. is still in boxes. However, I do believe that the guy's name is Bergbower or something like that. He learned the trade from his father. His booth at Hershey is near the 25' inflatable tires in the Chocolate field. Can anybody supply the missing information?

My 17 year old son ordered a core from bergs for his '31 and did it himself, real close fit and little in the way of problems using original tanks. I made him a jig using the radiator before the tanks were removed so when re assemblying the new core, tanks it would fit correctly.

When you take it in for a recore, be sure to take the shell too so he can fit it to the radiator.

Re: Radiator Recorring

I had my rad recorred a couple of years ago. I had the shop build a 4-row, 10 fins per inch "commercial" rig to help my Tudor from overheating. That was a mistake, after two hot summers. I even back flushed the system, however whenever it gets over (30 deg. C / 83 F. she starts to percolate. Just a side note, I own an '28 'AR' which has a different sized core compared to the rest of the 'A's. The core measures 19 1/2" between the bottom of the top tank and the top of the bottom tank. After July/28 (the time e-brakes were installed), the radiator core was expanded to 20". I found that out when I tried a '30 rad, just to see how it would fit, and realized the hood/ rad shell was 1" higher off the side sills. I couldn't use the hood latches to secure the hood down.
It's unfortunate because there isn't any "AR" rads out there that are being made for regular 'off the shelf' sales. I had to pay $500.00 bucks to have mine custom made.
I wonder why this discrepancy isn't mentioned in the judging standards or Ford documentation? Anybody have a spare working AR rad, cheap? Please email me via our website: modelaowners.com - Thanks

Yes Dean Gary is the best I have been buying from him for over 45 years (his dad) and the 29 round tube is the best, Ken
