AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? I have found a banjo rear out of a late 30's Ford that has the radius rods bolted to the bottom of the brake backing plates and to the closed drive shaft housing. I've been told these are the ones to use for an AV8 project. Will the width of the axles fit under Model A fenders? If not, what banjo rear do you suggest for the AV8 project?

Re: AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? Maybe post this on the EV8 board or the HAMB. JMO Do you have Tardel's book, wealth of info but evidently some of the dimensions are not correct.

Re: AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? Jack,
What kind of wheels do you have in mind? |
Re: AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? The drive shaft length would be an important consideration to me. I put a flathead in a model A back in the sixties with the model A backend. the engine sit way back because of the shorter V8 transmission. If the drive shaft had been six inches or so longer it would have made a better swap. then you have to consider that the rear spring is behind the axle on the V8 backends. you will probably need
to cut the frame in the rear and add another slightly longer section of model A frame and crossmember, maybe stack it on top of the present frame and box it,this would lower it a few inches in the process. |
Re: AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? 37-41 rears are the ones for a AV8..but not sure about fender clearence the 37-41 are about 2 inches wider than 28-31 rears..like FLAMINGO said get the Tardel book wealth of info..

Re: AV8 banjo rear axle choice ? I'm working on building a AV8 and was going to use a 35-36 ford banjo, they're more narrow then the later banjo's but you run into the problem with the drive shaft being the wrong splines if you want to run a higher ring gear & pinion.
So what I did was get away from the whole banjo rear and went open drive with a 39 transmission and a 70 bronco rear. The 66-76 bronco rears are narrow and only about a inch wider then the original Model A banjo and a lot more user friendly with gear ratios and strength behind higher horse power V8's. |
