Carb symptoms Hey Guys,
I swapped my Zenith for a "rebuilt" Tillly just to see if I could use it as a spare. Upon startup, it runs rough, requires the GAV backed WAY out (5-7 turns), backfires out the exaust and seems seems to be getting real hot. I didn't check the float level very closely. I couldn't find much directly addressing this in the old threads. What say Ye? Thanks as always for your input, Pete |
Re: Carb symptoms Not a carb expert here, but sounds like massive fuel starvation.. I would start with seeing if the fuel is reaching the bowl at an accptable rate or if there is a restriction in the float or input line as it may have too long of a extension past the threads where it goes into the carb and might be getting some reduction in flow.. Beyond that, might be a plugged jet or stuff caught in the air bleed passage at the idle screw.. Best of luck!

Re: Carb symptoms On A Tilly,(and you wont find this in any of the rebuild books.) The gasket between the 2 halfs blocks 1/2 of one of the center holes off. This depends on where you got your gaskets from.

Re: Carb symptoms Wick,
That is sure something I'll check. Dave, I think I'm getting good fuel flow since I put in a new temp. line just to run the Tilly as I didn't want to bend my Zenith line. |
Re: Carb symptoms Your 'rebuilt' Tillotson still may be in need of a good cleaning, but, its a nice simple carburetor.. Tilly's are famous for warped flanges, so, you could be experiencing a heck of an air leak.. The flange can be filed flat and then the throttle shaft bushings may require a little work if they start binding..

Re: Carb symptoms So it sounds to you folks like an air leak? It sort of does to me also. I'm also wondering about the engine heating up so quickly which could also be an air leak leaning out the mixture which would explain the wide open GAV.

Re: Carb symptoms Heres what to expect from a Good Tilly Carb. Keep in mind Timing, points and such must be right also.
I can let my 30 Pickup sit for a week or 3 months doesent matter. Gav stays at 1/2 turn. Pull choke out, spin motor over 1 time, push in choke and she will fire up and start to idle. Ive also got it Cuttin em off puk-a-da-puk puk-a-da-puk at idle. Wick |
Re: Carb symptoms It sounds to me like the top is warped and allowing air to enter carb bowl; this condition effects idle but normally will not effect the carb once you excellerate. You probable do not have any change if adjusting the idle air screw.
