top hole The top on my '30 coupe has sheetmetal welded over the hole. Can anyone give me the exact hole size & location?
Many thanks, Bob |
Re: top hole Could you be more specific about what you mean by the "hole". I have a '30 coupe and hope I could help. Gar Williams

Re: top hole Yes, the soft top has been welded in with sheet metal.

Re: top hole Can you see the original roof from the inside?
It's not just a smooth metal edge under there. Lots of holes for mouning the canvas top with nails to the wood substructure. Hopefully those holes weren't removed when they filled the top |
Re: top hole Sorry, no holes.

Re: top hole It sounds as if the flange on the inside of the top has been cut off when the insert was welded in place. The flange around the inside of the original was "stepped" down and nailed on several inch centers to the top wood. The chicken wire underlayment was attached over the wood and butted to the step flange. A pad was placed over the wire and the top fabric was applied and tacked through holes in the step flange. An aluminum trim strip was nailed as an edge to cover the fabric.
I suggest you try to locate a Coupe in process where you could get some good pictures and make a pattern of the opening. The hole is not square. You may be able to use a portion of the welded in insert to form a new step flange if it is, in fact, missing. Gar Williams |
Re: top hole Gar;
Many thanks, I'll start looking for an 'in-progress' coupe. Maybe an overlay will work for me. My antique acft is a '54 BE35E. Bob |
Re: top hole Have 1931 coupe in barn, no top(car roof) can take any pictures
or paper pattern.You're call. You can fly up North here too. |
Re: top hole Bob:
There must be somebody close to the Hendersonville area that has one in process or just sitting apart. If you search the local Craig's list for "Ford 1930" or 1931 you very well may find a car advertised that would give you an opportunity to see what the top was like. Also, I am sure some Fordbarner reading this would be willing to send pictures to you. It is a great bunch of guys and gals! Gar Williams |
Re: top hole Here is a picture of a rear window section that came off a car that someone filled the roof on. They welded the panel over the top of the stock roof.
I don't have this rear window section any more because I sold it, but if you look closely at the top left part of the image, you can see the holes and the flange. This will be on all 4 sides of the hole. The front being on the visor. http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1275675639 |
