Open Pickup Bed Hardware 1 Attachment(s)
Would like to validate the correct assembly configuration for the pickup bed. I just opened my jar of original parts to start restoration … I realize that all of the loose hardware goes under the bed but what I question most is the necessity of the round washer given that the square plate (including special bent corner to anchor into wood) would serve as a wide surface allowing the lock washer to seat & hold the nut securely. Seems that flat plate, lock washer, nut would be sufficient.
BTW: could use about 12 of the original bolts (smaller head than modern) and nuts (larger width & thickness than modern) … many of mine are badly rusted (going fine point so desire original). |
Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware I used modern bolts but modified the heads on a lathe to look original.

Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware Charles, you have 1 set of originals, make the rest.

I don't see a need for the smaller round washer. The picture below shows what is on my PU, no guarantee that this is what JS calls for, that is how it was that way when I purchased the truck.

Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware If you're going for fine point and the round washer was there originally........................

Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware The flat plates are esaly made. Have machine shop cut you square pieces on metal the right thickness. You drill the holes and bend the corner over.

Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware I have the original flat plates, but has been 10+ years since I disassembled so don't recall if the round washers were there or not (unfortunately, was not so detailed during disassembly). I can grind down modern carriage bolt heads (would prefer orig), but can't add width/thickness to the nuts (also prefer orig).

Re: Open Pickup Bed Hardware Charles, Try Mack Products, Moberly Missouri, 660 263 7444 and their web-site. They have everything you have referred to. They have a very informative parts catalog and "booklet" titled Restoring the Model "A" Pickup.
