question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 I have a question for guys that know the small block Ford well. I bought a 302 with the AOD transmission out of a 1982 model. I want to put into a 51 Ford street rod project, but I don't want all the serpentine stuff hanging on the front of the engine. I want it to be simple, like the 65-67 289 engines were, with just an alternator and possibley a power steering pump. No air pump or smog pump etc and just a common V belt system to drive them. Do I need to change the water pump and/or the timing chain cover to do this??? I can locate the older model alternator brackets and power steering brackets, but not sure what else I need to change.
Anybody with the info thanks for sharing. |
Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 Hi; I just know of a few things to look for.... Water pumps can be left or right outlet, engines can be internal or external balanced. Flex plates/front dampners will show the difference. There are 4 bolt and three bolt lower pulleys. Best bet is to use a 'donner' engine. Newc

Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 It has been my experience that the water pump and fan run in the opposite direction, due to the serpentine drive , so that tells me the water pump and timing covers are diffrent, I read a post on line about this swap into a 65 mustang, they said they changed the whole timing cover assembly and had to install a new type timing pointer , you might google a small block ford swap
and see what all is new on the after market in the way of retrofit parts. I do know for sure the balance has changed , so beware of swapping out reciprocating parts, sounds like an interesting project. keep us posted. Fordestes, |
Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 Just a suggestion, but you might consider keeping the serpentine drive and simply removing the smog and a/c pump. You could then just run a short belt. 5.0 Mustang guys have been doing that for close to 25 years now.

Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 you need an old engine and take the whole front off.

Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 I took off the smog pump and left the rest, I also use the EFI. Starts right up and drives nice. AOD I also used. If you want a picture let me know, I don't know how to post them here.

Re: question on 302 1982 vrs 1965 I ended up getting the front of the engine changed out using the water pump, alt, and power steering pump with all the brackets from a 1970 ford 302 engine. Didn't need to change the timing cover, it was the same as the 302 with the serpentine set up. So I didn't have to pull the front crank pulley off. The water pump from the 70 was different than the 82 water pump, not only the direction of turning, but also the bosses on the water pump were different.
Thanks to all that replied. |
