41 pickup: I need wiper motor / switch / linkage installation tips
 

Melissa Klein just rebuilt my wiper motor, and I got a new switch, but I'm having hell of s time getting all three installed and connected. I think I'm just too old, fat and inflexible. I've tried I think all possible installation sequences, and I just can't get all 3 in and connected. So, I'm looking for successful strategies. I haven't tried removing any of the myriad things in my way yet. I thought I'd check here first. Also, it gives my back a rest.

I understand there are multiple wiper configurations. Mine is just a single wiper connected directly to the motor thru the cowl, with the motor connected to the switch with a bent wire that hooks thru a grommet on the switch arm and pokes thru a grommet on the motor arm.
Picture attached.

This was all connected before I removed it all, though not actually working.

Like you, I'm finding it more difficult to climb under the dash and remain of any use when I do.
I find it easier to get the rod in pace on the motor, have the switch installed to the instrument panel prior to installing the motor.
Then hook the end of the rod into the switch and finally install
the motor.
Total pita.

I actually broke a rib working under the dash of my "46 pickup. Got wedged in between the door jamb and the seat riser. Now I remove the seat so that I don't have to work laying against the jamb. Add lots of padding the top edge of the riser and sit upside down off of it. Add plenty of light shining up under the dash and it makes it nearly bearable. Good luck!

Do you have the instrument cluster removed? Don't try doing anything with it in place.
It's bedtime here I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can offer any help.

I think I'll try Kube's technique one more time. At least he's made that work. If I can't, I'll take the cluster out. My assembly efforts on this truck so far are a little behind the disassembly ones.

As stories abound from pillows to broken ribs, I'll tell mine: Mellisa Klein's grandfather Kent Jaquith rebuilt my wiper motor, and I did manage to install it, (yes, with pillows) but final adjustment of the sweep was performed by Gary Mallast. I hadn't even guessed that it had adjustments to be made!

As an epilogue to this thread, I never could get the wiper motor hooked up from underneath, so I removed the instrument cluster, and then it was a piece of cake, and remarkably, nothing else broke in the process.

Good job! You did the right thing. I couldn't imagine doing it with the cluster in place.

Sometimes what seems like something would just take more time in the end usually makes it faster , and I always end up wondering why i didn't just do it in the first Place! But i am 67 and somedays I still have to try LOL Good job! And by the way that your still trying is the great part, there is no shame in getting older as long as you don't quit!
