1940 Ford trunk lid lock cylinder fitment issue
 

The existing lock cylinder in my '40 Sedan is "iffy" and will eventually unlock if I jiggle the key around for a while - very unreliable and time to replace it.

I had been looking for and found this NOS Ford trunk lock cylinder at a swap meet and the label was marked 01A-7043505-A. Presumably it is for a 1940 trunk lock according to the info I have. Can anyone confirm from the photos below that this is the correct part for a 1940 Ford sedan trunk lid? It has 2 lock pins but the one currently in place now only has 1; at the key end of the cylinder. The lock pin furthest away from the key is keeping it from allowing the key to withdraw and securing it in place. The socket that holds the cylinder only has one hole for a lock pin; the one nearest the key. From what I can tell it would work if I were to grind off the extra lock pin. Don't want to ruin a nice NOS part but would welcome any advice.

It should work without grinding that pin down. The overall length from the key hole to the end of the small pin should measure 1 5/16”. If it’s longer then it’s for a later car.

Thanks for your feedback. The cylinder dimensions overall are the same as the one I want to remove. However, there is only 1 hole in the socket where the lock cylinder resides and it is at the key end. If the lock pin at the far end of the cylinder were not there it would fit like a silk glove. I'm going to hold off making any mods to anything until I know more or find another lock cylinder and keys.

I believe it will fit and work properly with the two pins. With the cylinder out try working the two retaining pins to make sure the cylinder can be removed and installed properly, by the depression of the front pin. and the rear pin does not retain the cylinder in place.

Just grab it with a pair of small sharp side cutters It should pull straight out.

thanks for your comment. I've tried just about everything, but no dice. The socket doesn't have a hole to receive the rear pin on this new lock cylinder, and after extensive trial and error it is clearly evident that it must be there for it to fit properly. Otherwise, this lock cylinder fits nicely. Apparently it must be for a '41. :(

This is a 1940 Ford trunk/deck handle lock cylinder.... This one is a Briggs & Stratton instead of a HURD but they are physically the same. I think the one you have is for a 1939 Mercury.


I would suspect the key being the problem as much as the lock cylinder. (or a combination of the two)




Like Phil said, if you can pull the rear pin out of it it will work fine....

Me? I'd send it to Phil 32phil on the Barn) and have him handle this. It will be done correctly, and he could no doubt match the key to your glove box lock is desired.
Some things, to me anyway, are simply not worth the frustration...
