1954 Mercury Sun Valley Has anyone ever seen a fake Sun Valley? My parents had one back in 1956, looked like the real McCoy, but the green roof half was painted on. It was a hardtop, had the trim strip across the roof separating the two halves, but I don't remember the name emblem. It was almost new, beautiful car, had to be a 1954, as I remember favoring the tail lights over the 1953 version. The only one I ever saw, would this have been a one-off, or a local paint shop special? Were the real Sun Valleys 1954 and 1955 only? Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm out of my league for after the flatheads.

Re: 1954 Mercury Sun Valley While I cannot answer your question about other faux Sun Valleys, I do know that Mercury Sun Valleys were produced in 1954 and 1955 only. 54's were on the Monterey platform and 55's on the Montclair. Authentic '54 Sun Valleys were either yellow or mint green with a dark green hardtop. Not sure about the '55 color offerings.

Re: 1954 Mercury Sun Valley Russ, thank you for your response, and yes, my parent’s Merc was yellow with the green forward section of roof. A couple more things I remember about it, it was said to have a new engine, and they were instructed to use 20 weight oil. They also bought one of those ice chest things with a fan that set on the front floorboard. That stupid thing outlasted the Merc, which was replaced with a Brand X.

Re: 1954 Mercury Sun Valley Yes, the Y-blocks left the factory with lighter oils. Technically my 57 Y-block had a oil spec of 5w-30, or 10w-30 for summetrtime driving. The 20s were for winter service. I am used to the thicker viscosities in my collector cars, so this was a big change for me.
