Holley 94 I have a flathead v/8 with a Holley 94. It starts great and idles good. When I step on the throttle it dies. If I pull the choke it will accelerate, if I push the choke in it will die. If I don't use the choke and keep pumpng the pedal it will run. It also backfires thru the carb. I need help.

Re: Holley 94 Seems to be trying to run too lean, off idle, that is why pulling the choke helps. Backfires through the Carb. are a quick way to rupture the 94 power valve. What model 94 and what year is the engine? Charlie Schwendler is the 94 repair man for a rebuild.
The suggestions above are the items that enrich the engine when accelerating. Did this Carb. ever run properly? |
Re: Holley 94 was A Ford-Holley carburetor is one of the easiest and fun things to re-build on our old Fords, but also the easiest to get so wrong that the car will never start. An example of “A little knowledge can be dangerous”. First, there are rebuild kits available that have multiple parts that don’t work with our carbs, and some parts that require modification to work with our carbs. Next, a recital of steps to correctly set up a 94 can read like a short story, and still get it wrong. Simple, yes, but in-person instruction required for the fine points. Here is where a rebuild done by Charlie Shwindler is the best route to take to get your Ford on the road again. Charlie’s rebuilds are plug and play right out of the box. With all due respect for the guy that insists on doing everything himself, it’s a no-brainer to have Charlie Schindler on your pit crew.

Re: Holley 94 I think the consensus is that when it backfires, there is a good chance the seals on the power valve have been ruptured. If that happened, the power valve will allow all the fuel in the bowl to leak down into the intake.

Re: Holley 94 I just went through mine again recently. It is an Edelbrock 94 that I bought new under 10 years ago. What passes for “gasoline” out here is a travesty and I think that and not enjoying at least running it once a week contributes to having issues.
As previously mentioned, it is easy to use the wrong pieces to rebuild a Holley 94. All the kits out on the market are of varying levels of quality and completeness. I’ve got a Moroso power valve tool that lets me eliminate that item as an issue… and believe me, a “new” power valve isn’t automatically an UNLEAKING power valve. I’ve also got an exhaust gas analyzer and 100k worth of other tuning tools. For most folks though, In general, there’s enough detail-oriented stuff about a Holley 94 that you just may want to give Charlie a call. |

Re: Holley 94 This is just my opinion, but I would try rebuilding the carb yourself if you are mechanically inclined. I am a novice as compared to most on here and all my carbs I have rebuilt run great after some tuning. You will learn a lot along the way. I always get my carb kits from Daytona.
Also keep in mind that your issue could be ignition, lots of stuff there that could be the problem that shows up as what might appear as a fuel issue. Timing, advance, coil, condenser, etc. After we restored the 52, she died on the side of the road and wouldn’t restart. Finally got it start and limped home. Fumbled around with the carb for a few hours and resorted to replacing the condenser since it was an easy step and an elimination of a trouble spot. Has run strong ever since. JB |
Re: Holley 94 One other thing, once you get it running, I would setup a spare carb that is tuned. If you run into problems down the road, you can swap them out quickly and eliminate a carb issue in your troubleshooting steps.
