1936 model 68 leaking new water pumps
 

just put on two new water pumps with gaskets that came with them. 3 hole mount on each and tough to get wrench on that bottom one. Put all on filled up and both leaking from around that bottom bolt area. Any ideas , pull off and put some type of sealant around the gaskets? could I have overtightened one of those bolts?

I can't imagine you tightened it down too much. My gosh, I'd think you'd crack the housing if you had.
I always use some type of sealer. My preference is RTV black. A thin coat on each side of the gasket. Allow it to set up for two to three minutes prior to installing.

On water related items I like to do as Kube suggests putting a thin smear of sealant on both sides and waiting a couple minutes before installing. Additionally, I only install a little more than finger tight to draw the parts together and walk away. I then fully tighten in the morning as this keeps you from squeezing out the sealant and allows it to bond to all surfaces before being compressed. I worked in a garage as a kid for a short time and this was the bosses method to avoid comebacks for leaks.


Also does not hurt to check machined surfaces for flatness with a quick swipe of a sharp file.

Are these cast OR Aluminum heads??


As Art Doctor mentioned, I like to run a very smooth mill machinist file across the flat to see just how flat the surface of the head is and usually end up running the file across the surface a few different angles to get a good flat area surrounding the opening and between the bolt holes.
