Engine wear

Barners, I am going to check a used engine tomorrow. Question after I do a compression test can I manually, thru the spark plug hole, feel for a cylinder ridge JR

No not really, the spark plug hole is over the valves not the piston. An inspection camera on the end of a snake might work for a visual.

You should know that a compression check on a cold engine can be unreliable. Thoroughly warm it up to full operating temp if possible. On the other hand, low numbers from a cold engine can translate to an excellent bargaining chip for you.

Every used engine is a gamble - no matter what the person says, even if they are a friend. What year/type of engine and what sort of price? Also, is there any guarantee as to the condition? Frankly, every used engine I've ever bought, I've ended up rebuilding in a year or two.

Ask if you can pull the intake at minimum and head gaskets are next . Offer new gaskets and installed may help . Its definitely worth the $75 to look inside . If up north ( freeze areas ) check for cracks or water , rust where it should not be .

Yes, my endoscope has become indispensable.
