I always thought that wording from the song was just plain weird. Jesus was of the people. Not a king.

Among many proof texts, I’ll mention Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42:6.
The Messiah is the Devine King and the light to the nations/gentiles. I’ll add Revelation 19:16, Jesus is King of kings.

Jesus the Messiah truly is the King and joy to the world!
