34 horn problem
 

Hi folks, my 34 horn has been a pain. I cant seem to get a reliable ground. I have cleaned the contact at the bottom where the wire harness and rod connect as well as removing the rod from steering wheel bending the tabs and cleaning that area as well. you can here a faint try and once in a wile it will work. there is some leakage from the steering box but minimal, its full of jd corn grease. any clue? When diagnosing a horn issue I always start by hooking them directly up to a battery and see if it is the horn or the wiring at fault. Almost always its the wiring as a direct wire job will usually result in a loud blast. But on occasion the points/electromagnetic doohickey within can get stuck. As a kid I remember my dad would then spray into the horn opening with carb cleaner and rap it with a screwdriver handle to free it up, sometimes adding some WD-40 for good measure. Not sure if either of those are just old farmer fixes but they worked and we never bought a new horn that I can remember. I grew up in the northeast where rust and corrosion were prevalent and fixing a horn was not all that uncommon of an event whether it be corroded terminals or corroded innards.

- Open the horn coil cover and unclip the two wires.
- Run test wires from the battery clipping the negative to to horn bullet clip
- Touch the other wire to the other horn bullet clip

This will tell you if the horn is good. If it is you now need to check the wires for continuity.

- Check the 12 gauge yellow wire back to the battery
- Thread a yardstick up through the steering wheel, bending it and then down again through the steering wheel rim. This will push the horn button in and ground the it
- First check from the horn black-yellow wire at the horn to any ground.
- If this indicates high resistance, undo the horn-light switch
- Now check from the same horn terminal to the middle button of the switch
- Also check from the soldered end of the horn rod to ground.

thanks everyone, i cleaned the bullet connectors at the horn, they did not seem that bad but after clean and electric grease its working. whoo hoo Ken
