What grease do you use?
 

I didn't want to get two issues going in the same thread so here's another lube question.

It's time to do some lubing on my "new" 1930 sedan.

I have a couple of grease guns holding "who knows what" grease.

Is there any problem with just using what I have or is there a recommended grease for the multitude of points that need greasing?

I'm not opposed to buying another grease gun and new grease if that's what I should do.

I use John Deere Polyurea on nearly everything I own……except wheel bearings. I use grease that is specifically for high speed wheel bearings on them.

Any grease today is better than what was used when the cars were new. I use the red synthetic stuff just because that's what I had.
Randy Gross bought up all the old "Sta-Lube" made grease described as "old style" that he could find. I got a can from him when he did my cast iron drums. I use it in the wheel bearings. Sta-Lube is now owned by CRC and they don't make it anymore.


Color and Texture:
The "old style" Sta-Lube wheel bearing grease was known for being thick, yellow, and fibrous, with a consistency similar to other "old-time" greases of that era.
Use:
It was specifically formulated for use in drum brake systems on older vehicles.
Brand:
It was a product from Sta-Lube, which was a brand name with a long history in automotive and marine lubricants before being acquired by CRC Industries.

I would suspect that they have cartridges in them, just pull the cartridge out and look at it.
If they're older w/out cartridges that ain't gonna work.

For my A I just use regular chassis grease .

The trick is to not mix grease with different bases, at least that is what I was taught.

With an original Model A being 95+ years old, you have to wonder how many owners your car has had and the different greases and oils used over that time period. That does not the "wrench holders" like me that have "worked" on them.

Some useless interesting off-topic information:

The older Rolls Royces have an oil reservoir and a pump activated by a pedal at the drivers location. There are little copper lines that go to every location that would be greased by any other car. The excess oil drips on the ground. The driver pushes the pedal at the required intervals to "grease" the chassis.

I think the same way, I used Lucas and it worked well for me.

Twenty dollar bill. In special cases a hundred dollar bill is needed.

I use synthetic or synthetic blend grease suitable for wheel bearings, and a special grease with a high washout property for the water pump. I am not brand fussy, but the lubricants I use must be SAE rated.

Hi atch,


Because I don't ride in the winter, I always use a very thick (>NLG 3) waterproof lithium grease with about 5% MoS2 added.
To get it into the grease nipples easily, I heat it to about 40°C.


The thick layer conceals some plain bearing play. The MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) additive acts as an emergency lubrication when the grease bearing spot is overloaded.

I use an industrial pneumatic greas gune. I do this every 1000 mls.

I started using the "Red & Tacky" grease from Lucas, but i'm a little worried.
Why? I have noticed a more than usual liquid discharge from the zerk fittings.

It appears it's the grease is liquefying and I'm getting a drip of it here and there.
I don't remember this with any other grease this much. we'll see......

I think you know how many miles I put on my trucks/trailers & how anal I am about maintenance. I ONLY use Mobil 1 Synthetic cartridges in my grease guns & have for many years. Hoping to NOT jinx myself, but I haven't lost a wheel bearing in the last 10 years & only ONE in the last 19 years. By the way that is close to 3 million miles. You could not give me any other brands

@Dinos A....That is common with red synthetic lube grease, my Mobil 1 one does the same thing. It is aggravating when it drips on you when you pick up the lube gun, but it is nothing to worry about when it comes to working!

Bill, I have used Lucas Red and Tacky for years. I can find nowhere on the container that sez it is a synthetic grease. You would think if it is a synthetic, lucas would advertise somewhere on the container.
