Cowl to side-rails connection for 68B? Move body off frame?
 

Hi all,

I have decided to remove my 68B body from the frame. My car is an old restoration, so I'm not sure what's original in the attachment of the cowl structure to the rest of the body. Currently, the only attachment between the cowl and the wooden side rails appears to be a bolt on each side. (Not counting the three bolts that attach the cowl to the frame, two of which also go through the side rails when on the frame).

In addition to the one bolt (lower circle in the attached picture). There are two unused holes that could potentially be used for wood screws into the side rail (higher circle). Is that what they are for? Or is the one bolt the only thing that directly connects the cowl to the body?

Re the removal: I plan to keep the closed, stripped doors on the body for the move in order to stabilize the cowl. Otherwise the body has only the floor pieces and gas tank in place. I plan to use manpower (4) to lift the body and place on 4 saw horses (or 2 4x4s set on 4 saw horses?).

Can the front of the body be lifted by the cowl or should the forward lifters be positioned at the hinge post? Are there other ways to stabilize the cowl section?

Is there a preferred place on the body to have the supports? Any other tips?

your cowl is missing two wood screws up forward of the carriage bolt. I can see the open holes. install them. than you can lift it any place up front. if you are leaving the doors on make sure you secure the doors closed. I think the screws are 12X 1 1/4 counter sunk

This what I always do when picking a body off the chassis.I measure for the bolt holes,then drill the wood,and recess the holes on the bottoms for the bolt heads so they don't hang up while sliding it around.3 bolts on each side is good on that open cab,and is also good for a closed cab.No doors flopping around,and no closed car roofs trying to pull themselves off from body flexing.On this 30 open cab I didn't even bother to take the roof off.I can also rassle the bodies around all by myself with those skids mounted on the bottom.I pulled a body off a Tudor and put it back on by myself this way.
