speedometer cable routing 1941 ford

a previous owner or restorer routed the speedometer cable and the very thick wiring harness bundle for the dashboard through the same hole in the firewall. and because either end of the new speedometer cable is quite a bit larger than the cable itself, there is no way it will fit through the hole along with the wiring harness. in fact, i had to cut the cable in half just to get it out!

so does anyone have an alternative to my intention of drilling a new hole in the firewall (i'm armed with drill in hand and ready to do the deed) to accommodate the speedometer cable? or recommendations as to where to drill it?

If I remember correctly, it actually follows the path of the parking brake cable . I’ve got 3 41s , you would think I’d remember this but crs has been a daily battle. I’ll look tomorrow and take some pics .

It does go through the same route as the parking brake cable with the large gasket that I posted the part number of . Hard for me to get a clear picture . I will try again today .

Does this picture help? Needless to say, you'll have to slide the picture to the left and then scroll down......

yes, the pic clearly shows what looks like the speedometer and parking brake cable passing through the same hole in the firewall.

in my car that hole is visibly obscured from the engine by a slightly wider vertical piece of sheet metal that probably runs down to the frame or a cross member. anyway that hole (just an inch to the right of the arrow and out of sight) is currently in use by the wiring harness and so not usable. so i will be drilling a new hole in the firewall for the speedometer cable.

i'm thinking a bit to the left and higher so that i'll have a straight, or at least straighter, shot to the back of the speedometer connector.

speedometer cable is in and working. i ended up drilling a 5/8" hole about where the arrow points.

What seal are you using to keep out the unwanted? Did you look up the part number I posted ? It could of helped with the correct installation.

my installation is not intended to be an original installation. the oval hole in the firewall that was originally designed for the dual purpose grommet that seals the speedometer cable and the brake cable was, instead, used by the restorer to run the wiring harness for the dashboard. there was never a plan, on my part, to remove the harness from that hole.

and yes, indeed i did see the correct grommet for the oval hole on the net. in fact there's one already partially jammed into that hole in my firewall along with the wiring harness, but, apparently the restorer couldn't get the grommet in all the way, as it's about half in and half out. the wiring harness is too bulky, of course, for that.

the speedometer cable was in that oval hole along with the wiring harness when i bought the car (had to cut it in two to get it out!) but the brake cable was not, it's routed elsewhere. so i drilled a NEW hole close to the ovalized hole. it has no grommet for the time-being. the new hole is round and i don't think i'll have any trouble finding a grommet that fits, when it's decided to put one in.
