ZDDP oil additive

I’ve been having started woes (broken Bendix - now fixed), glowing red exhaust manifold (maybe just a too retarded spark) and have yet another question for the forum.

I just changed out my oil and a friend of mine said that I might consider adding ZDDP. I don’t know much about this. Is this needed? If so, how much?

Thank you so much for your help!

A lot of things can cause you to worry. If you are not running your car to extremes you really don't need to worry about ZDDP.

No need for Zinc.
It was a crutch to help the cam life of hi-po motors during the muscle era.
Particularly liked what rotorwrench said about testing for exhaust blockage.
Cars that sit for long periods are susceptible to critters nesting and / or storing food nut acorns etc. in the pipe.
Have you checked that yet?

Re: ZDDP oil additive

Zinc phosphate wasn't present in the oils from the prewar period. That stuff is for higher performance OHV engines to reduce cam and tappet wear. Low spring tension on valves and wider tappet faces don't need the stuff.
