16" Wide 5 drum replacement

3 Attachment(s)
good morning folks. My drum is cracked and I'm wondering if I can knock the 5 studs out and replace just the drum section? If so, I can't figure out from the parts catalogue what the proper name is. Appreciate any tips!

The challenge is finding a good drum . . . I'm not aware of them being reproduced? Anybody have any ideas on this?

Re: 16" Wide 5 drum replacement

Doubt that any new drums can be found as Ford only provided complete assemblies.

Apparently there was some aftermarket drums made as we have run across them a couple times; pretty scarce tho.

Best bet would be to find another usable hub/drum assembly.

If not, look for a matching drum on a different assembly and salvage the good drum.

A two part hub/drum assembly can be separated.

The studs can not be knocked out; they are swedged. The swedge need to be cut out before removing the studs.

Next problem may be locating correct studs, followed by finding someone that can swedge the assembly.

We have done that with two piece car hub/drum assemblies.

Am I looking at a 3/4ton drum? Chucks trucks -best chance. Some circle trackers used these before the quick change rear diffs. Newc

Going by his user name it's a 1941 1 ton.

Re: 16" Wide 5 drum replacement

To the best of my knowledge a wide five assembly identifies the truck as a 3/4 ton. Not a lot of them were built, so I guess we must hope that your hub and drum interchange with the 1/2 ton. As seen here, even the more common 1/2 ton part is hard to find in useable shape. First off, does your truck have a 122" wheelbase? The 122" wb was shared by the 3/4 ton and the tonner, but the tonner has 17" multi-piece wheels and a 5 on 6 7/8" lug pattern, the rear is a 'full floating axle'. I will have to bust out my copy of James Wagner's 'Ford Trucks Since 1905'. There is a lot of good text and factory photos there. Can you get a side view showing the rear axle and hub? Edit: Holy Cow! I see now in your first photo that you do indeed have a full floater on the rear! Very scarce item. Might be a good time to switch out to a later 8 lug full floater or maybe better yet, a 9" rear. I bet you could find 5 on 5 1/2" front hub/drum assemblies that would slip right onto your front spindles.

Those studs need to be pressed out by someone that KNOWS what they are doing, otherwise you risk damaging the hub. The same person will probably press in the new studs. Don't do anything until you find the new drum as it will probably come with a hub already installed.

If you can locate a drum, used or NOSR, I think finding the studs to attach the hub to the drum, will be a problem. I think the part number will be 91D-xxxx. The Ford "Green Book" will provide you the correct number. They are extremely hard to find. I would try and see if a passenger car drum is the same. Good luck, the studs will still have to be properly installed.

Re: 16" Wide 5 drum replacement

Wagner's book says that the 3/4 ton utilized the commercial car's 12" brakes so I bet fronts are a dead match with the half ton. The rear with it's full floaing axle hub is gonna be the tough part. It could be that the center hole in the drum is the same, front and rear and 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. If that's the case the drum shouldn't be too very hard to find. As others have stated, it will take all thr right stuff to make the swap.

Re: 16" Wide 5 drum replacement

Is your cracked drum a front drum or a rear drum?
My understanding on front drums matches GB's, the fronts are the same as 37-39 passenger car and 1/2 ton.
I have a complete rear axle with drums from a 41 3/4 ton, including wide five rear drums. I have not taken the drums off and inspected them. I will not have time to do anything with that rear axle for a month or so, but it isn't going anywhere.

The drums with the 3 deep ribs typically were only on 36 passenger cars, the later drums on passenger cars were nearly smooth.

when you find a drum ,you can send it to JG Brake and have it relined. They do a great job. Great folks there! They are on the web.

Tried sending you links but doesn't work. Click The Swap Meet on the Top Red bar then in next window click Early V8,then in red search this forum bar put in 1937 Front Drums. That seller has 36's and 38's. That ad was posted Friday so current.
