strange bell housing
 

Attached is a photo of a strange bellhousing. An early V-8 transmission will bolt up to it , but I have no idea what motor it goes to, but I suspect it might be a tractor. Seeking a possible answer.

Looks like its set up for steady rods, like to put an 8ba into an earlier chassis. got a Ford # or any other markings?

I'll double check it, but my first inspection did not reveal any numbers.

Just looking at it , one would say 331 Cadillac to a early ford. Tim

You may be right. Looking at it after your comments, it does appear a little "aftermarketish".

I think you are right. Is there are part # cast into it? If so, post it.

I've have a strange bell housing I acquired a couple years ago. Looks like a 49-50 Merc stamped intermediate bell housing (8BA front bolt pattern, early Ford trans rear bolt pattern) only it's a little over a half inch deeper? Nobody has been able to tell me what it fits.

Almost certainly that is the bell that Ford used on the 48-51 H series flathead 226 six cylinder engine.

I am hesitant to post since Mac is more knowledgeable than me (and everyone else) on old Ford transmission and transmission related items, but that is not a normal 48-51 flathead six bell housing. The H series truck bell housings look very similar to the V8 units, except the bolt hole spacing for the engine block is different. I'm guessing the unit in question is aftermarket or for a stationary power unit.

O.K. I went over this piece with a fine tooth comb and found no part number. I did find some red paint, which withstood my wire brushing. The starter end cover appears to be longer and possibly larger in diameter than a Ford cover.

I have never seen a early ford six bell so Mac is probably right. The reason I said 331 Cad to early ford is I just removed had rebuilt and installed one in my brotherinlaws 52 Cad and that bell looks like it would bolt right on the Cad block. Which like the pre 49 ford V8s has the main bellhousing as part of the block casting . Cadillac and Olds overhead valve engines were comon swaps for street roders back in the day so I thought adaptor rather then bell. Tim

This is a 1948 H series 6 cyl bell housing.

Bob, is that a cast iron bell or stamped steel? The one I have is cast iron.

The ears for steady rods is the oddity.

Just a guess, could that bell be for the V-12 Flathead engine ?

The location of the starter cup is different……..Mark
