39 Ford Standard coupe

Hello, does anyone know if the 39 standard hood, when opened would remain open without a prop? Mine will not, and not sure if it is missing springs. Currently i use a rod to prop open, but this is risky on windy days.

Thanks,

John

Mine stays open, no prop. You may need new springs.

No prop rod required.

Be aware that the reproduction hood supports are NOT correct even though they are advertised as such.

Rebuilding yours is the best path forward. Usually all that is required is removing the rivet at the pivot point, welding up the holes (sure to be elongated) and redrilling / reaming to the correct diameter.
Find a rivet of the correct diameter at your local hardware store, cut it to the proper length, about 3/16" longer than the total width of the support levers, insert and peen over.

You may swap out the springs if you really feel the need but, in my experience, the elongated holes are the root casue of the supports not doing their job.

If you have the V-8 Club's 38-39 book check section 4 beginning with page 4-44. It explains with photos the difference between the hoods and hinges of the 38 deluxe and the 39 standard. On your car you could be missing the springs that are attached to the hinges that hold the hood up in the open position. If you have the springs they may have become weak over time and no longer function as intended. If you don't have the book it is a wealth of information for the 38-39 owner. You can purchase it on the Early Ford V-8 Club website.
Kube is also correct about the holes at the pivot point being worn.

1938 Ford Deluxe Hood Mechanism
The 1939 Ford Standard Hood Mechanism arrangement was a 100% improvement over what was used in the 1938 Ford Deluxe.

Hmm,this hood prop looks to be very much like the oe hood prop on my '37 sedan which i thought was a one year only part. Tom.

'37 - '38 hood props are identical.

I used a Model A brake rod attached at one end. Then inserted it in 1/2 id rubber tube so it did not rattle.

Re: 39 Ford Standard coupe

Hi, I got my book today, and mine is missing the assembly with springs. My dad built the car several years ago, and can't say why they were omitted on the build. It's a restomod, and not much original on the car. When spring comes I will look to see of the holes are still there.
I'm going to visit family in March. I will look to see if the hinges that have the springs are in the parts left over.
Thanks,
John

Re: 39 Ford Standard coupe

Hi all. After looking at my 38/39 Ford book, seems the 39 standard coupe had 2 hood hinges, but only one hood support (drivers side). I just gained access to my car (snow piles) and only have mounting location on drivers side.
Looking at supports on early ford, it looks to show two? Perhaps I'm interpreted it wrong?
I'm sure people on this forum will know. Thanks in advance!

Re: 39 Ford Standard coupe

There is but one support and that is on the left side. Be aware that the support is different than the '40. You can't simply remove the lower "leg" from the '40 support to fit a '39 standard. It won't work. Plus, the reproductions are wrong and won't work either.
