8ba crank timing gear

I need to install a new crankshaft timing gear on a 8BA. Can this be done with the engine in the car?

Probably. Oil pan, front cover, all lower accessories, radiator all removed. Any crossmembers in the way of your puller?

It could but the oil pan and timing cover will have to come off. My thoughts it would be easier to pull the engine and also a neater job putting the oil pan gasket on.

Re: 8ba crank timing gear

There seem to have been a couple of threads lately about "Can I ... without pulling the engine?". In most cases you can, but it is probably more effort and risky than simply pulling the engine. Maybe I'm spoiled because I spend a hundred bucks on a "Cherry-Picker" 30 years ago. One of the best investments I have ever made and it is useful for a lot more things than just pulling engines.

Plus, you get a chance to tidy up the engine compartment, which is something all of these vehicles can probably use

If you want to insure that you'll have a "no leak" result, pull the engine.
The ease of working on the engine when out of the car greatly increases the chances of total success re: a leak free reassembly. Plus, you'll have the chance to inspect the engine and engine compartment for needed repairs, cleaning and painting.

The answer is yes.
Remove radiator, oil pan & timing cover.

Re: 8ba crank timing gear

You can remove all the above written parts. However to remove the gear which is a shrink fit onto the crank your going to need a very good high quality three jaw puller. The jaws need to get behind the gear unfortunately there is no room with the crankshaft still in the block for this to take place.

And, I wonder why you feel you need a new crank timing gear.

Be really careful with a 3-jaw puller! I have some really good ones, and it is very easy to just break the teeth off the crank gear as most of these pullers have jaws that are not designed to really get behind a gear. They grab hold of the teeth, then break them off.

I use a bearing splitter/separator (different device - kind of a clamshell deal) - which gets behind the gear and then has bolts to pickup the outer pulling piece.

Similar to this:

You need a KR Wilson gear puller like this.

I love ebay. It's like having a goldang swap meet in your living room. It lacks the comraderie of the real event, but sometimes you just need a certain thing.

That crank gear puller on Ebay is well worth the dough.

Well, I bought the puller and it doesn't not fit the flathead crank gear. Ugh. I should have realized this. Oh well, if anyone needs one, I have one for sale.

LOL
