Running Board Dihlemma
 

I ordered some running boards & covers some time ago. Come to find out, they are about 1/4 of an inch longer than my originals and the outer edge is 'way too long and has a lip on them. I've been trying to get them to the right dimension but it's a struggle. I got them from eBay from a "Moos", I think. I'm torn between trying to tweek these or find some quality boards. any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Rod.

Some information on the year and model of V8 Ford you are needing running boards for would be helpful.

To summarize, the running boards you bought were not for a 1939 standard sedan? Are you able to post a photo of them so we can see what boards you have purchased? Then we might be able advise.

Have you asked the seller who is his supplier or who is the manufacturer? That may shed some light on the problem.

Are they believing they are too long because they don't fit between the fenders?
Did you measure these carefully against the old running boards?
If you are attempting to fit them between the fenders, um, you may very well have to loosen a fender or two, install the board and then tighten the fenders in the "new" place.

Thanks for all the constructive comments. I couldn't get ahold of the supplier. The boards are at least 1/4" too long. The main concern is that the outside lip is at least 3/8 to 7/16 longer than my originals. I have them shortened but I'm not sure what to do about the lip. I guess cut the board & add a piece behind to strengthen it. ????

I think a photo will show us if you have the correct running board to start with. Kube has good points in his post. If you can't post photos let us know. You can send them to a member here that will post them for you.

If you have a '39 standard it uses the same running boards as all the '37s and '38s, This information is from the V8 Club's '38-'39 book. This is a well researched book with the info from the Ford archives. If you do not have this book I would recommend you buy it from the Early Ford V-8 Club. www.earlyfordv8.org

To the original poster: We need better answers if you want great advice.
Are the fenders on the car?
Did you remove the old boards?
The new boards you believe are too long... exactly where are they too long? Overall? Just the outer lip?
You bought them on eBay. Okay. How about sharing the item number with us? We will look it up.
If you bought them from Classicparts4u on eBay, well, you got taken. Junk.

Thank you, Seth, TJ, & Kube. I will try to learn how to post pictures. The overall length is too long by 1/4 inch or so. I couldn't get any info from the eBay seller, Moos. The original boards fit fine & it definitely is a standard model. I'll work on the picture thing & try to research the seller. Thanks to all.

Not sure if they are still available but years ago I replaced my 39 Std. boards with ones from Drake. Perfect fit.

Those running boards in the link are 1940 (and 1939 Deluxe), the vendor also lists the 1937-38 (and 1939 Standard). They are OK street rod boards intended to be painted and run without covers (they do not have the subtle arch front to back). Because they are intended to be painted and installed the manufacturer added the 1/4" front to back to compensate for the thickness of covers.


If you want stock style ribbed boards there are basically three options. Drake is still showing in stock their rubber covered steel boards $$$$. We make fiberglass boards with the stock rib pattern $$$. Find a pair of ORIGINAL steel boards (look for the vent hole pattern on the top of the boards) and use the covers you have.


Bottom line to me... OK product, wrong application.
