intake for 1953 mercury- dual carbs
 

I just purchased a 1953 mercury engine. I’m taking it apart to get it tested before I get too excited.
looking at the carburetor situation, I don’t want to run the original mercury carburetor. I see my only option to keep a traditional hot rod look is to convert it over to a ford intake.
when I do so, I would like to run two carburetors. I would also like to run the factory generator in the factory location. Is that possible?
I did see on craigslist this intake and carburetor set up. I was not able to buy it as someone else bought it who was closer.
But, would this intake work with the factory generator location? And if so, does anyone know what a part number for this would be.
or does anyone have a suggestion for traditional look with the the mercury intake?

Those are quite commonly available and are normally quite affordable. Speedway lists them. Just look for a dual carb manifold for an 8BA.

I saw what speedway had and other sites.
I prefer an old one, rather than new and like the look of the edelbrock, but cant seem to find another edelbrock like the one i saw on craigslist.
I dont want the risers making a two port from a one.

if you change carb. you will also need a different dist. as the orriginal relies on the carb for its vacuum siginal.

Edelbrock made a dual carb intake that would allow the generator in the original location. But it was discontinued some time ago. I believe it is number 1040 if that helps. A used one should be available somewhere.

There is more to this than meets the eye. Please see the detailed response I posted on your thread on the H.A.M.B. I think you will find it informative.

"sidevalve8ba" (above) is correct; there are used manifolds available everywhere, you just have to keep your eyes open. Get one of your choice (best if a known manufacturer) and get two matching carburetor. 94's are a lot cheaper than 97's and probably better for your purposes anyway. Send them to Charlie Schwendler in New York for a rebuild and modification to run them as duals (he's done this many times and knows what it takes). You probably won't be very happy just slapping a couple of used carbs on a manifold and leaving it at that.

Again, my personal choice is a small base Rochester 2G on a bored out Merc manifold. Flows as much as 2 3 bolt carbs and is much more efficient.

And, of course, "marko39" is correct; a distributor change is necessary. Either a SBC converted by Charlie or an old Mallory dual point.

OK. lots to take in here. Thanks. I have a great 53 ford engine that will serve my project nicely. But when i got the Mercury, i thought i was in a great position. Now i see its a bit more complicated. but thanks for the info. first things first- i need to have the block checked, then work out the detail.

In my opinion, it comes down to this for you. It's either a 2G on your bored out Merc manifold, or a couple of 94's on a "Biased" intake manifold. I'd start with progressive linkage and have "Charlie ny" prep the carbs.
