Add to Type A Trans Fluid with ???

Greetings,
I have just acquired the parts to have my Fordomatic pan gasket replaced along with the screen. The local shop says I also have to supply the fluid. So I shopped for Type A as specified. Couldn't find it. Looked online and was directed to an old Ford Barn Y8 & Later site 5 years old.
Does anyone here have knowledge of the replacement for Type A. It is no longer produced.
My pan is leaking from the attachment bolts on all sides. I have No knowledge about this trans being rebuilt. As far as I know it contains Type A. I inherited 2 quarts with the car.
The previous owner had passed. Great guy..
So, I have the ability to Add to the current fluid. I don't have the means to get that trans rebuilt or replaced. Is there a current ATF that I can Add without damaging the internal parts?
The other Ford Barn thread appeared to be talking about replacement instead the adding to current fluid. I put a message on that thread also, even though it's so old( like me ) ha ha.
If anyone can help, I would sure appreciate it.
Yours Truly, JP

A reader on the OHV site lead me to O'Reilly, who sells Type A. So hopefully the problem is solved. JP

Wasn't type A superseded with type F ?

Re: Add to Type A Trans Fluid with ???

The replacement for Type A is Mercon-Dexron assuming the original materials are used or the replacements are the same as original. . This issue has been discussed regarding early Tbirds.

However, the correct fluid depends on the type of materials used in the trans. No trans expert but the trans people should know what to use depending on what material goes into the trans.

Type F used as a substitute for type A is supposed to cause harder shifts. Again, no experience on this.

Try a Google search on this

You might try ebay and Amazon for type A if ORileys does not have it.

Type "A" is a GM-supplied (and chemical make-up) from the early '40s. I'd go heavy on your best guess, as well as using a bunch of "PUCKY" on those bolts and gasket. Otherwise, bite the bullet and put a T5 in there for O/D.
