46 pickup 8BA swap generator help!
 

Hey guys, I'll be swapping an 8BA into my '46 pickup. On the 59A in the truck the fan is attached to the end of the generator. I just noticed that the pulleys on the the 8BA are much farther forward away from the block than they are on the 59A. What are my options for adapting my current generator/fan to the 8BA. See pics. Thanks!

there is another cast iron generator mount and another one for the fan running two belts

I put a 8BA in a 48 car. I used the 8RT (Truck) water pumps, the original generator and the seperate fan. I can't remember what crank pulley I used, but am guessing it was the one off the '48 car. All the pulleys have the wide belt. The belt nearest the block drives both water pumps and the generator. The foremost belt, just the fan.

You can cut off the outer pulley and use a '39 truck generator. Newc

I have a 51 Merc motor I was going to put into a '32 Ford. I started on it and got sidetracked, like everything else around here. I used the truck pumps; the pulleys stick out farther, so the belt clears the distributor, but they still have the same mounting pads as the earlier pumps do and they use a wide belt. I'm pretty sure I bought them new from Airtex, it's been a long time. I was going to use a '49 crankshaft pulley with the outer pulley ground off, leaving just the one wide pulley groove that matched up with the truck pumps left. The 8BA generator and fan will be further forward than they are on the 59A. For the generator (if I remember correctly) I had a spare one from a 12V 57 T-bird that had two different alignment dowel holes in the side of the case, I don't even think it even uses those holes in '57. One of those dowel holes fit the late model generator mount and the pulley line up with my truck pumps. I changed the rear generator cover to a '53 late model flathead with the bearing instead of the bushing, this also got rid of the t-bird mounting bracket at the rear. Then I ground off the mounting bracket on the front of the generator so it would fit into the 8BA flathead mount. When I was done, I had a 12V generator that looked like it came that way. I "think" I also changed the pulley on the '57 T-Bird generator to a wide belt pulley with the holes for a generator mounted fan. The engine is on the stand and needs to be finished along with a thousand other projects.

The fan on your generator is from a pre-war setup with a taller thinner radiator, and probably is not as efficient as the stock fan. All Ford trucks from 42 to 52 had a fan that hung off either the generator (42-47) or hung off the generator bracket (48-52). All these fans will work for putting an 8BA in your truck, and will put a bigger, better fan in a better place on your radiator than a pre-war fan on a generator.

Easy way would be to use all 8ba stuff. Did this swap on my first ford. A 42 pickup and I put in a 52 255 mercury. With all the 8ba truck stuff it was a bolt in' Tim

I would recommend that you switch to a 12volt system and Altinator and use an electric fan on the radiator. I've been doing this for the past 30years, works fine. PS starter works well with the 11volts never changed it.
