KRW hub puller question
 

My KRW puller part that slips over the axle threads has no threads. It just slips over the end of the axle threads per the directions. A fellow member sent me a picture of the corresponding part from his KRW puller with threads and he says he bottoms it on the axle. I have noticed that Vintage Precision recommends to back off their threaded axle protector 1/2 turn. Did KRW change this part at some point? I was wondering what you other fellows have with your KRW pullers. Pictures enclosed.

On my KRW style puller there is a cap that just slides over the threads on the end of the axle.

There are no threads on the two-piece collar that fits over the end of the hub on the drum on my original KRW puller.

I am not referring to the collar David, just the axle thread protector.

I have had three of those pullers. One original and two reproductions. All of them had threads in the nut that screws onto the end of the axle. I’m now interested to know if they ever made them without threads because sometimes I have to unscrew the nut to achieve enough pull to get the drum to completely break free. Without threads, you would never be able to do that.

Mine threads on and bottoms out, resulting in zero damage to threads and no mushrooming of the end. I’ve never had a problem requiring unscrewing to gain length, and I’ve used it a kazillion times, always with a cheater bar. Never failed. Take it back, failed on one junkyard axle, success for that one required the use of a red wrench.

I have repro one that came in a nice KRW wooden box. It has a deep threaded nut that goes over the threads with an alignment divot for the puller. It works really slick. I heard that they stopped reproducing them. If they did that's a shame, they were made really well.

The directions for the puller say: Place thread protecting cap on axle. It does not mention to screw it on. I am wondering if different years of manufacture were different. V8fordman said he has had two reproductions. I was not aware of that. Actually, I made a homemade puller that I prefer as I put a large nut attached to one side of the puller so that I can use 2 wrenches, 1 to keep the drum from turning and the other to tighten the puller bolt.

This KRW hub puller was bought March 24, 2008 for $150. No longer being made. These are the parts that came with it. The little end cap that slides over the axle has no threads but does have a dimple on the end for centering the internal threaded bolt. If that little end cap was threaded it would create more friction re: ease of hub removal. With this cap there is no pressure on the threads. Works fine.

That is exactly what I have. Now I am wondering if KRW was the original and had a threaded axle cover. Possibly the Winfield is the reproduction??

Mine is about the same age as 19Fordy’s, and is exactly the same except the outer housing halves are blue. No threads in the little protector cap.

I realize that the Ford axle is "harder than the hubs of hell" as an old mechanic once told me. However. I have a short hard pin that I insert into the cotter pin hole just for insurance that no mushrooming of the axle occurs. Over kill I suppose but sometimes the amount of pressure needed to release the hub is tremendous.
