UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Heads off, intake off, all valves are pinned up with wedges, all the lifters are pinned up as well, CAM will not come out, it's hitting some stop somewhere.....anyone know blocking it?
Do I rotate cam or crank and continue to pull on camshaft? They are "separated' because I have missing teeth on the camshaft, engine still in car, trying to repair while in car. Any help appreciated. Tom |
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam make sure fuel pump push rod is out
|
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam see which lifter does not move when you pull the cam fwd.
|
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Everything is pinned up. Are you saying it's still getting caught on one of the lifters?
|

This? And if one lifter isn't quite high enough the cam will catch it. |
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Guys, is there a cam retainer? My press on fiber gear is still on the camshaft, could there be a retainer behind the gear? I saw a video of a guy removing a cam retainer but he had a metal gear.
I still can't get my cam out, it's going up against a hard stop somewhere.....all the valves and lifters are pinned up. Thx |
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Probably just a lobe getting hung up on a bearing hole as you're trying to slide it out.
|
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Can you rotate it or will it not spin either?
|
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam The pressed on gear does not have a retainer to remove. Suggest drill small holes on the gear where it attaches to the cam to release the broken cam gear.

Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam I’m reading that you have all the parts you mentioned lifted out of the way, Richard Crow asked if you had the fuel pump push rod pulled back, you didn’t list that, you didn’t respond to Mr. Crow. Could that push rod be the issue?
|
Re: 39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam I had the same issue on my 1937 21 stud engine. The difference was that the engine was out of the car, all the lifters were out of the engine and the fuel pump pushrod. The cam would move 1/4”-1/2” and then felt like it was hitting something. I then removed the rear idler gear cover, behind the flywheel, but that didn’t help. I then used some gentle taps on the rear end of the camshaft and was able to remove the cam. My thought was there were some deposits on the cam journals that prevented its removal. I wish you luck with your project.

Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Cam finally came out, pulled, hammered, pulled hammered.
Does anyone have a camshaft for sale with a metal gear? |
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam If your engine uses cam bearings be sure and check their condition after all that pulling and hammering.
|
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam Just assume you'll need new cam bearings . . . they are not expensive.
|

Just make sure they're NOT the 0.011" oversize (IF I remember correctly) that folks occasionally run into, possibly used at factory to correct blocks with that deficiency, thus rejection of block, otherwise. Coop . |
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam You can also have undersize bearings. I have a cam that is 10 thou under.
|
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam I'm not replacing the cam bearings if this even has cam bearings, the journals and lobes on mine are clean with no pitting. I would reuse this cam if not for the press on gear type.
Can anyone recommend a new Cam and gear including parts numbers? What lift and duration am I looking for ideally? I generally stay stock unless there's a cam that will provide some improvements that I can just drop in. |
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam press on one of the metal gears-yes you can get them early ford v8 in sc has them
|
Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam The cam you have is all nice and cozy with the lifters you have - if it is in good shape, put a new gear on it and put er' back in!

Re: UPDATE***39 Ford deluxe can't remove cam New fiber gear??? I can't find a press on metal gear!
