Remote oil filter- fill before install
 

I have the MCF Mark Kirby remote filter setup, installing in truck now, motor has been pre-run. Should the filter be pre filled or not. I remember reading about this...anyone know. Thanks

Mark always advised me not to pre-fill the filter with his full flow system, and frankly I never saw much time difference with oil pressure rise either way. What I tried years ago is remove the input AN fitting to the filter mount and connect my flathead engine pre-oiler, a simple 1 gallon garden sprayer with engine oil. Now, the filter is filled correctly, and pressure rise time is much less! I perform this after oil/filter changes on my FE powered '40 which also has a remote filter.

my filter is up above the drivers side cylinder head about 8” mounted to firewall . 1/2 AN line
from pan to filter /1/2 return

Any remote filter conversion I add to Ford flathead projects I always prefill the filter and recommend this to anyone using a remote conversion. Heck I always do the same on all of my daily drivers as well.

Is there ANY good reason NOT to pre-fill a filter? I've been doing that since I was a snot-nosed kid and I haven't lost an engine yet as a result of oil starvation.

I’ll join this club…..on daily drivers with a horizontal filter, I put in some and screw the filter on real quick…..ok so, where’s that guy from who prefils his air filter…LOL…..Mark

I've been changing oil, both engine and transmission /hydraulic for over 50 years and never pre-filled one yet. Never harmed an engine yet either.

On my '32, I mounted the horizontal filter with a quick release system so that I can fill the filter vertically and then mount horizontally.

I know he is gone, but the people I know who actually knew him told me that Kirby was more of a salesman than machinist/mechanic. I too cannot fathom why anyone would tell people to NOT prefill an oil filter unless he installed them upside down.

The only reason that I have ever hear (and I think it’s ridiculous) is that the oil poured into the filter would not be filtered. Seriously, you would worry about 8-12oz of brand new oil not being filtered??? My own belief is that if there is not a reason (other than convenience) to NOT pre fill then do it if it makes you warm and fuzzy inside

I knew Mark for 25 years and think your remarks about him are totally out of place. He isn't around to explain his beliefs, so lets keep the "I know a guy" crap out of here.


As I already stated, pressurizing the new filter was the best method I've found to minimize the oil pressure rise time on my remote filter installations, as that's what the OP was initially asking about.



PS-I've always prefilled vertical block-mounted filters.

The reason given to me was that if you prefill your filter you risk getting an air lock in your oil pump. Because after an oil change, you have to displace about 4oz of air on the intake side of the pump. Therefore if you have prefilled your filter there can be too much resistance on the upstream side. I was having issues with my 100% MCF system, but turned out to be the incorrect dipstick meaning I was about 2 quarts low.
So now I never bother prefilling, just do your oil change with the engine warm, and start the engine soon after, and make sure you get pressure.
