New fuel shut off valve worked, but was always wet

I installed a brand new fuel shutoff valve under the gas tank. Several club members warned me to not damage the fuel tank by over-tightening the valve with its tapered thread. (This is a big clue but I didn’t know it at the time.) As the valve went in it was already very snug and seemed almost impossible to further tighten when it was still pointing 180 degrees from the fuel line. I held my breath giving it that last half turn. The new valve functioned correctly, but would always leave my fingers smelling of gasoline when I turned it on or off. Tightening the nut that bears down on the shaft did not help. A club member found the problem: the valve needed just a few more degrees of rotation to perfectly align with the flared end of the fuel line. I hope this helps someone.

Good news! I was sure this was going to be another defective part report, glad that is not the case. :)

I've run into David's issue. To help prevent that, I now put the outlet tubing finger tight onto the valve before the final tightening. When it's just about lined up with the inlet to the sediment bowl I give it a scosh more turn to seat it on the sediment bowl, and then tighten things up.

Teflon tape works great, worked for me.

I used aircraft fuel line sealer on both my A's and not a leak in 2 years on one and 1 year so far on the other.
