Anyone know if a NOS remanufactured distributor is a bolt on
 

I have a NOS remanufactured 1932-1936 V8 distributor that looks new. Anyone know if they are already set up to just bolt on? Of course I’ll need to add points and set them. Thanks

"set up to just bolt on" would include having points sets installed and hopefully adjusted and run-in on a distributor machine which services are available at 3rd Gen Automotive in Tennessee or with Charlie Schwindler in New York.

I had a NOS reman distributor for my 42 Ford and it did not work. After I sent it to Charlie it worked great. I would recommend sending it to Charlie or Michael for a check up.

I will do just that and send it off... What I have running now works OK but why not have a completely good spare. It does not include the coil so I'll try to get my hands on a spare coil too and send the entire works off together. I appreciate the information!

My experience with 3 of them was the grease dried up ad the advance did not move freely.
They ended up being clean cores that I had to disassemble and soak to free everything up

NOS is not Remanufactured. Two different things.
A remanufactured distributor has the points and everything else installed and has had bushings replaced if necessary, etc. It was and may be ready to run. Of course, after sitting in a box for decades, it's possible the grease has dried up.
I used to have a bunch of these units and the worst of them only required fresh grease.
I suppose the way they were stored has something to do with it.

NOS: A NEW and NEVER used part that was manufactured by the automotive company or their designated supplier.
NORS: A part made for a vehicle by an outside source. Example? NAPA.
Remanufactured: A part that has been previously used but has been remanufactured to be used once again.

All the NOS distributors I have had as described above had the advance mechanism stuck with hard old grease and the vacuum brake stuck in the cylinder for the same reason. I always take them completely apart and clean, lube the bushings and everything check the wick in the oiler cavity. Then put on my Sun machine to check and set points and timing. I wouldn't ever trust a NOS one to be a "bolt on" and go.

In addition to the excellent points made above, much of what is called NOS today had actually been rejected initially as unusable or would have required rework to use it, therefore rejected at the factory. Other "NOS" parts have proven to be used, traded into the boxes of new parts, found in dark corners of dealerships gone out of business. There is almost always a reason why a so-called NOS part has not been snapped up and put into service for all these years. Examine those parts carefully to know exactly what you're buying.

I had a NOS 34 distributor.
Grease had dried up so had it all stripped and cleaned up.
Had it set up properly with a NOS coil with Skip's internals and no problems whatsoever.

Others have guided you well, on old Reman distributors the weights always need diassembled, cam and shaft polished and cleaned due to the old dired up grease.

Thanks again to all... and the distributor and coil are on there way to Charlie as of today. Spoke to Charlie on the phone twice and I am very impressed with his knowledge and how polite he is. Can't wait to get the unit back and get it mounted onto my engine.

One more ? is does it matter how the unit mounts to the engine? I have been told that the key mates it up perfectly and so spin it 180 degrees and it still mounts up fine. Thoughts on this subject appreciated.

The above statement is not correct! The key that fits into the front of the camshaft is offset to one side, look closely and make sure you see the offset. Installing it wrong will damage things that probably wouldn't be covered by Charlie's warranty.

No way! The slot in the front of the camshaft is offset and as a result the distributor will only fit one way and that is not also 180 degrees opposite. That's a surefire way to break the ears off the distributor housing when you attempt to tighten the three bolts attaching the distributor to the timing gear cover.

The key "mates it up perfectly" to where the dizzy drops into place by hand. At 180º out, you'd need to pull it in with the bolts, and there is where you run into big problems.

When correct, the distributor will go all the way on to the timing gear cover and sit flat. Also always use a new gasket between the timing gear cover and the distributor.
