Model AA 3 speed and auxillary
 

Saw a 28-29 chassis in scrapyard and could not help myself. Transmission shifts as does auxillary. No practical use for it, other than belting to my old blacksmith drill, perhaps.

That second gear box is a Ford Dual-Hi that was married with the three speed transmission from a Ford car. Standard issue for 28's and early 29's. The Dual High gave you an under-drive.

Thanks, that what I understand. Just couldn’t let it go to the torch and come back as a Turdota. May find a way to belt it to my old 2 speed champion drill press. That would give me 12 speeds!

Actually, several internal gears on the commonly used machine tool "Drive-All" are the same gears used in the Model A.

Three forward speeds - no reverse.

I have often thought that a "Dual High" could be incorporated into a torque tube - but done "backwards" to offer an overdrive.

By the time you are done, you may as well buy a Mitchell Tranny.

I have observed that the dual high seems most closely associated with the three speed Model A transmission. By the time the four speed was offered, the low end gears were considered low enough so the dual high wasn't required.

Instead by then everyone was buying a Warford for the Model AA - which offered an overdrive.

The special parts to mate the Warford unit to the Model AA were included in the "Green Book" (1947) Including the special mix/match universal joint.

It has been done with success. There was a NC legendary stovebolt back in the 50s that had a set up like that that was fast then.

I’ve seen threads on the HAMB where people have contemplated running it backwards. Didn’t see that anyone did. I just have a soft spot for the old iron. And here I am trying to deplete my wares….

A member in our club had a '30 coupe with a "reversed" dual high trans he ran for 30 years with no problems. He has since passed away.

These must have been ideal for local service trucks in the day. Like coal deliveries, and tow trucks.
